Has anyone any experience of these guys? I'm thinking of buying a spare engine for my workboat, it would be like for like. I know these engines have been replaced for a reason, but desperate times. And they come with a warranty.

I bought a reconditioned/modified Bukh 25 from them 2 years ago. Sadly there were issues with the throttle system and gear change that they could not readily resolve so they refunded the money. I suspect they had studious rebuilt engine but not the gearbox but who knows?

The freshwater conversion was excellent thought it made the unit rather taller than convenient as header tank separate from rest of unit.

However mostly ordered a recon Bukh to avoid changing engine mounts and not that much cheaper than a new Beta.

Not bought an engine from them, but have visited the "farm" and met Shaun the owner. Reasonable facilities for "checking over and testing" - that is rigs for mounting engine and running with coolant, but not necessarily under load. Been in business a long time. Would have been happy to buy from him if he had what I needed, but 30hp d1 30s, Betas, Yanmars etc in good nick are rare as hens teeth now.

Hopefully someone else on here (or another private seller) has one. Otherwise you’re paying them for the privilege of finding and testing it for you. Buying used from a business has a bit of ‘double jeopardy’ to it (it’ll neither be a bargain nor completely worry free). That said, ME always get good feedback from what I’ve read. Probably better them than many others.

I bought a replacement second hand Hurth gearbox from them which unfortunately didn’t cure the problem I had. They accepted it back and arranged a full refund so I was pretty impressed with service.

What was the condition of your engine when you sold it to them, if you don't mind me asking

It was a 48 year old Perkins 4108. Been looked after well, new alternator, fuel lift pump and compression was excellent. Started easily with use of the thermostat on a cold day. Leaked and burned some oil, which is usual for them. Replaced it with a quieter, cleaner Beta 35.

I have my eye on the Sabre. It hasn't been rebuilt but it's been ' checked over and tested' whatever that means
I think they're a reasonable-ish company and would consider them next time. When I was looking for a replacement engine (ex lifeboat engine) , I seem to recall they stated that they run it on a pallet and check strategic points with an IR thermometer. I think they mostly do some basic checks and sell on and if there are any problems they resolve them - someone I know had a Bukh dv24 from them and there was a problem with the alternator. They sent a replacement with no quibble and swiftly. However had the engine been checked more thoroughly, they would have spotted the problem, so I feel that the level of "reconditioning" in it's loosest sense, is generally minimal, although they do have some engines that they have done major work to.

They are mentioned on the forums on a fairly regular basis and I don't think anyone has said anything negative about them. I went to them for a replacement Bukh DV24 a few years ago and was very happy with the service.
