I am looking to spec. a high performance manifold paint in colour silver or aluminium, or if I can't source a really good, proven one, probably use a ceramic coating for the exhaust manifolds on Joseph Soar.

I had some vague memory that marine diesel exhaust manifold temperatures went up to about 380-400 C. (Standard manifold - not water cooled) Is this correct ... ?

Sperex, paint for exhaust manifolds on cars, on my rally engines these used to glow red hot, but the paint never burnt off, availoable in a few colours, matt finish. Jaguar exhaust manifolds used to be enamelled and it did burn off eventually. Sperex doesnt.

Gardners like yours, indeed most continuously rated diesels will run to about 400C before they start to burn out the valves or cause other injector or piston related unpleasantness; if your paint will stand 500C, it will last longer than the rest of the top end.

Ceramic coatings have the advantage that they insulate as well as look pretty, so your engine room will be a nicer place to be.

Thanks for all these contributions ...

ccscott49 ... Is this the SPEREX you refer to .. ? This is the special one 1500F, which is something over 800C. I hadn't come across this before - looks like a top product. Did you shot-blast your manifolds .. ?

penfold ... this is the ceramic coating ... it IS nice .. ! & I am seriously considering it in 'Sterling Silver :) .. circa £300 per manifold & they do all the preparation, but I have to get the two 5-cylinder manifolds from Northern Ireland to Oxford & I would probably have to take them myself as I couldn't trust a carrier. replacement 5LW exhaust manifolds are impossible to get .. !

There is at least one other specialist offering ceramic coating other than Zircotec and they are(or at least were) a lot cheaper; I will try to remember to dig out their name when I get home next week.

I didn't realise the 5LW had a one piece manifold; I'd have thought a 2-branch(off a 4LW) and a 3-branch(6LW) into a secondary would do the trick. Every day's a school day.

penfold ... Thanks - I would appreciate those details.

Yes the 5LW manifold is one-piece, as per photo. Mind you one benefit of the heat from a normally painted manifold, is that a Devon or Cornish Pastie, or other such delicacy, wrapped in foil, can be heated in 30 minutes between the air intake manifold and block .. :)

Camcoat is the name; out of interest I had a quick look to see what other providers are available. Over on Pistonheads jethot get a good write up too. I have no experience of either except that camcoat responded promptly to my enquiry about prices.

I am in the process of evaluating ceramic coating of dry turbo housings using the company you have considered:

I have seen sample of a Jaguar XK exhaust manifold which seems to replicate the original black enamel finish extremely well.

All British technology with excellent reputation. Costs are OK despite being suppliers to Formula 1!
