Marine apps; Apple vs. Android

The Acer Iconia B1 tablet that my family gave me last year has GPS built-in and Android OS. It came with Google amps app. I looked at many navigation apps on GooglePlay before installing the free MemoryMap one as I was also installing Antares charts. I needed to buy the MemoryMap UKHO charts (£25 for all UK waters charts) and have found it very good as a plotter. I have had a few problems with moving from one chart to the next, which is not always seamless, but that may be down to my technological ineptitude. The Iconia B1 has a rather small screen (7") so I am wondering if my wife would like a Hudl 2 as a present soon.

One problem I have found with the tablet when using it ashore is that the land mapping apps all seem to need access to the www as they need to download maps on the move. This is a real pain, although you can save bits of Google Maps to the memory card when you have access to broadband if you think of it before you go. I could of course buy the MemoryMap OS package for the whole of the UK, but its price of £300 is the exception to the rule that things for the boat cost 10 times the price of an equivalent thing for a land-based activity.
