Marinas in Sydney

I'm not too sure about hiring mobos (as a raggie) but Sydney is packed at weekends and weekday evening with sailing boats of all sizes, and quite a few motorboats as well.

We hired a 36 foot sailing boat for a couple of nights from Sydney by Sail dot com and had a magical time exploring the bays and creeks right up into the middle of national parks, anchoring in secluded bits overnight - all inside the "Heads" of the harbour. We covered quite a few miles and didn't nearly explore it all.

IMHO I think it's well worth checking out if there are motorboat hire places too, and if not then you could consider hiring a sailing boat and sticking to engine only (allowing for the extra depth and if you could bear the pace)?

Loads of great boating around Sysney. The harbour itself is huge. When we were there we stayed near Darling Harbour which wasn't overful by any means. I don't think there are any long term berths there, but plenty of visitors pontoons and guys running fishing boats and the like. Fabulous place to stop for a while with great restaurants and lots to do. If you google 'Darling Harbour' you should get something.

Loads of great boating

we hired a 24 footer with no formalities, just told them I had a boat in the UK and a threw in few well chosen navigation phrases, we cruised out to the bridge and had some great fishing and swimming, went to Darling harbour for lunch and had a great day. when we were approaching the marina where we got the boat I radio'd in to tell them to meet me with lines as instructed. I went through the whole routine, using the radio like we do in the UK. We moored up safely and the captain in a very loud voiced shouted " Fxxking formal sport", we nearly fell overboard with laughter, try Doyls for lunch, best Bugs and lobster in the world

Alex, I haven't been since 2000 olympics, (though I'm going in 3 weeks) but there is a new superyacht sized marina on the south side (I think), and a marina well worth a look and drink in the bar is CYCA at Rushcutters Bay (North shore, west of Wooloomoloo, about 3 miles from town) where the Syd-Hobart race is run from. The marinas all feel a bit british so far as boat sizes are concerned, not at all SofF ish.

Re: update

Was seconded on business to Sydney for 18 months in the 90's. A right old drag (joke). Walked into the royal yacht squadron (near Taronga) & crewed on various yachts racing in Sydney harbour (manic) then chartered out of Pittwater (Northern beaches) and also out on the Hawkesbury (Berowra Creek) bit like going upriver in Apocalyse now but without the guns. Water incredibly phosporescent at night. No problem chartering yachts and motor boats, pretty informal and quite straight forward. Don't know about big fast ones though. Careful swimming especially up river. Sharks breed there.
