Thanks

Re: Marina\'s Barcelona

Port Vell is well (centrally) located and by May the over-wintering boats should have started moving out and the summer peak season not started, so space shouldn't be a problem either. We spent a week or so there in May 2005, security/facilities were good; the only proviso I'd make would be avoid getting put in berth at the landward end of the pontoons; as the noise from the bars/restaurants above can run late into the night

Re: Marina\'s Barcelona

Port Olympic is just farther out from the centre of Barcelona but still within easy walking distance.

I've seen a bit of swell inside though and it is not as secure.

And Olympic is incredibly noisy. Even if you berth as far as possible from the solid wall of discos along the sea front, the noise echoes / rebounds all around the marina till 6:00 in the morning

Re: Marina\'s Barcelona

Yep Olympic is very noisey but great if you like to Party until 4am!

In 2002 i got so cheesed off with the noise I set off to find another Marina...and ended up in Cal'n'bosch (Menorca)....Port Vell was full! Port Vell the best Marina/location in that area.

Re: Marina\'s Barcelona

I am amazed anyone stays at Port Olympic because it is so noisey. Stayed in Port Vell 2 years back. Brilliant cenral location. Best city marina I have been to.

Re: Marina\'s Barcelona

Concur - Olympic is very noisy.
We moved to Vell, which is naturally 'older' but much nicer. Boats seem pretty secure, but beware the surrounding areas - we got upsettingly mugged within sight of the marina.
It is sensible to be very careful, suspicious and street-wise in Barca (esp. Las Ramblas, Sagrada Familia).
Keep your hand on your ha'penny, as they say.

Re: Marina\'s Barcelona

Agree with Grehan, Barcelona is great but there is an epidemic of petty crime (violent crime less common) The authorities are playing it down but in almost every party of people going to Barcelona at least one will be pickpocketed. I went to a wedding there last year with 120 overseas visitors and 4 were independently 'done' while out on the streets. They are very cute and have had lots of practice so you need to be extra alert

Re: Marina\'s Barcelona

We are spending the winter in Marina Badalona which is about 5 miles up the coast. 10 minutes by train metro or tram or bus or bike for that matter.
www.marinabadalona.com It is clean and very secure and much less money than Port Vell.
we enjoy it here very much and Badalona itself is a cool little suburb with plenty of interesting stuff in it's own right.

best of luck

Re: Marina\'s Barcelona

We've been mugged twice in the last year in Barcelona - once we were pulled over by smart south American-looking people who stole my wife's handbag and the next they stole our bag while buying tickets in the metro. Everyone we know who has been to Barcelona has been mugged and my wife's sister lives there, so we know quite a few! The trick is not to look like a tourist, it seems, but that isn't always easy. We will never return.

Re: Marina Badalona food shops

Big issue for us, esp with Popeye's beer consumption. In Olympic, Barca, we were advised to hijack trolleys from the nearest(?) supermarket. In Split , when the security guards vetoed the hijacking, we were offered free van delivery. In Turkey, we took the dolmus into town, and a taxi back.
Pilot books often mention "provisions on shore", without the logistics of doing a week's shopping without shore transport

Re: Marina Badalona

Nice Blog - will come in handy for our summer trip, (planned to be Lagos - Malta via Barcelona, Sardinia, Italy.

Cheers
