As some know we are based in Portugal and have our boat berthed in Nazare Marina. While we had our house built we lived on the boat for 18months. Something that appears to be very difficult in UK Marinas.

Yesterday when talking to the marina manager I asked if they were busy. They replied very quiet and added that Sailing has altered in that many now leave their boat in a marina and sail far less between ports and usually only locally and they added that since Brexit the British have disappeared.

So if you are considering a sailing trip South from UK along the Atlantic Coast there appears to be plenty of visitors spaces available.

Certainly lots of free spaces in Nazare at present.

For anyone concerned about post brexit rules here on the Silver Coast we are still getting lots of non EU immigrants moving here. Lots of US, Canadian and British citizens arriving on IIRC a D7 visa. Providing you can demonstrate you are financially independent and have health insurance (hence no burden on the Portuguese authorities) you are welcome. Demand for properties from Immigrants is increasing house prices though! Cost of living is still far cheaper on the Silver Coast than UK and other closeby EU countries and far cheaper than the Algarve area!

I was joking

OK no problem - just sad when informed by Marina staff that after Brexit the British have disappeared! Wanted to point out that both Sailing along the coast and moving to the EU is still possible.

Interesting comment though that other EU nationals are also not travelling as much tending to base their boats somewhere and use them as a holiday home - I assume Covid fears etc.

Thanks to LittleSister for pointing out smelling error! Now corrected.

Also though - how much is down to Covid which i suspect ruled out a lot of travel for many people. That wiull take a while to get back to normal!!

Are the orca reports putting people off? I’ve certainly heard of them being used as a reason to stay in the Solent, but I suspect that those saying it were only going to stay local anyway.

The bit between 90 days and 180 days is the problem. I don't want to become tax resident but with maintenance and cruising you quickly use up available days. That's why I moved to the Aegean - 90 days in EU and 90 days Turkey will give us a week or so antifouling and our 2 * 2 months of cruising.

Getting here, though, under the new regime would have been much more difficult.

No even Nortada has packed his bags and returned to UK. Unfortunately necessitated by his wife's health.

Oh dear, what about all the sports bars that were serving full english breakfast and showing rugby and cricket? Did they switch to Fußball and Weißwurst now or actual Portuguese things?

Don't ever visit Algarve but my understanding is that there are still plenty of Brits but just not British Sailors.
