The marina I'm currently based in has a set of common sense rule that berth holders and visitors sign to abide by . They all sign saying that they accept the rules yet many of them think they are above them.
Now, I dont really mind if they stub or rip their toes on pontoon planks or recieve a hefty splinter cos they were not wearing foot wear . Nor do I mind if their children do not wear life jackets on the pontoon or indeed ride in the"Trollies" or fish within the marina BUT i do mind when berth ride bicyles wobbling all over the place on the pontoons and I do mind brainless berth holder who let their dogs run "free" up and downthe pontoons p*ssing all over water hoses and cr*pping at will because both of these affect my wellbeing.
What is it with these people ??? Will I renew my berth here next year ?? I dont think so !!

It is a shame that the "chavs" of this world have discovered boating.

As to the dog poo, pick it up with rubber gloves and put it in the cockpit of the offending boat owner. See how they like it.

I would also have a word with the marina manager!

Agree entirely but let's not discriminate, there's posh people who behave badly as well...

You might not have an alternative choice of marina, but if you can 'march with your feet' then do just that - and drop the marina owners (copied to the manager) a brief letter stating why you've left and gone over to the competition.

Alternatively, do you have a berth-holders association who can represent your concerns? Dog wee on domestic water supply hoses, is a serious elf'n'safety issue, is it not?

FWIW I always bunch my fist over water-hose outlets to wash down the first few feet of the hose before shoving the thing into my water tank inlet.

And what about those people who have friends, and stay up late drinking and chatting in the cockpit throwing their cans in the water which always float around to your boat and damage your bootline?

And, and, and those people who don't take the trolleys back eh?

As for dog poop. I watched an early morning dog walker on a pontoon at Bembridge last year. She was just walking away from the 'deposit' but when she spotted me she cleaned it up. Unfortunately a guy on the other side of the jetty hadn't seen the incident and when he woke and filled his water tank, he dragged the hose through the slippery remnants. Stopped me worrying about the possibility of dog pee on the hose though!

Don't really want to spoil anyone's day by being cheeky, but I feel irritated most of the time in my day job. And I just can't let myself drift off into the same bad tempered frame of mind at the weekends.

Trying to get marina managers to deliver what they promised when you signed the contract is like phoning up the council to ask why the bins have not been collected. You almost always end up with the rubbish still in your garden, boost your blood pressure with the argument, and the stress just builds inside you.

Or is this just me?

Don't let them spoil your day mate. You've worked hard and paid a lot of money to escape for a few days or hours. Look the other way, meditate, drink in the daytime. Just don't let them spoil your time on the boat. Importantly, if the boating starts to become stressful and irritating, it's hard to think of what's left.

Cheers.

yes i know how you feel, had the same problem with a yacht near us who had cats they just c... everywhere and the owners wre quite dismissive of it!

Heard a story yesterday about a guy in the yard that had a barrel under his boat with a pipe from the sea toilet leading into it, which he made copious use of. He got caught emptying the barrel in to the lock. He didn't stay much longer after that.

The problem with marinas is that you get so many people cheek by jowl so the inconsiderate ones affect so many more people. Loud music, kids in RIBs, boats parked so their anchor hits you on the head as you walk along the pontoon in the dark, lines tied to the opposite side of a walkway, the guy who takes the last two trollies just as you are unloading a weeks supply of gear.

If anti-social behaviour is making you so fed up with the place that you're thinking of leaving, you owe it to the management (not the erks behind the desk) to give them a chance to rectify the situation. Of course they may feel the offenders' custom is more valuable than yours. At least in Plymouth you have a choice of 3.

What's wrong with naming the marina?

Probably yacht haven. We're based there and have dogs but try to make sure that everything is washed down when they poo/pee on the pontoon. But there was one occasion where we simply missed one poo, must have been dark. Another berth holder quuite rightly complained to us and we immediately cleaned it up. We assumed it was one of our dogs, but not absolutely certain.
Have been known to clear up after other peopes dogs cos it seemed the right thing to do and also cos others would have seen our dogs and assumed they'd done it.
Won't be a problem much longer as we're off in a few weeks.

I sympathise, but rejoice that the vast majority of marina users are sane and civilised. Approached with a gentle query as to why "Your dog is peeing on the hoses..." who would not move to lower the temperature?

The occasional owner (almost always a visitor) will tell you to F off - we have all experienced it. Either shrug, or tell him that your crew will be back shortly for a mass micturation on his topsides...so he has a few minutes to reconsider his position on being a lout.

Sadly, no marina staff can be relied on to intervene; it's all above their paygrade...

Stay cool!

You are obviously resposible dog owners and I applaud you for it. The trouble is the don't care attitude of people today,"Its not my worry somebody else will clean it up" , yet they are the first to complain if it happens to them. We all pay hefty marina charges and marina owners should be taken to task over not enforcing the rules they set, that most people abide by.

Generally, the problem has worsened, and not only in this country. I did once get help in St Peter Port with a large motor-boat who thought we would all enjoy what passed for music in his life, though he yelled abuse at us for a while thereafter.

One of the more alarming bits of behaviour was once when we saw (abroad) a man shove the drinking-water hose up the rear end of a large hound to wash it.

Not a big fan of Marinas, even less so on hearing that some folks use the facilities as an al fresco toilet. Whether dog or owner - who really knows

Offenders should have their "messages" returned. with interest :p

In my experience they are even less considerate for others than the likes of dross like me.

I have every sympathy for the OP. I find it disgusting and it makes me so angry that dog owners cannot be bothered to clean up after their animals.
The reason it makes me so bl00dy angry is that being liveaboards with two Jack Russels, I am sick & tired of getting the blame, when we ALWAYS clean up after our dogs.
We never go ashore without Poo Bags and we do not allow them out of sight in case they should do a poo and we should miss it. They wander freely round the upper scupper but have been taught not to go onto the pontoon unless told to.

Unfortunately when peeps see poo on the pontoon and they see you have a dog, then it must be your dog thats guilty.

When we arrive at a marina I make a specific point of contacting the staff to inform them that we have dogs & what procedures we take to ensure they do not effect others.

Why can't all dog owners do as we do? It makes life so much easier.
