I'm still waiting for the Bloc to arrive so I'll see if I can make do with the Fr version when it does..

The Bloc is NOT mandatory in any way. As mentioned above it's an easy way to cover French legal requirements... you should be carrying the ColRegs, local paper or electronic charts, info about the local nav markers and the List of Lights, and keeping a log if going in "semi-hauturier" zones (> 6nm) (your MFD should be able to do that for you, if asked nicely)

Being a local, I can say Heikell's Imray is far more precise than the Bloc (that seldom mentions anchorages and mainly focuses on marinas). The current (sixth) edition is only a few months old and quite up to date.
