The moderators should have no problem with this as requested information is public domain.

What % price increase have you ben asked for next year.?

Gosport marina asking an increase of 5% and state it is comparable with other Solent marinas.

Any one got hard info on other marinas.

Why am I asking? just curious.

You think you've got problems! I'm in Port Solent - 12M. They've changed the banding of rates (I wonder why!). My annual berth has gone from £5120 to £5632 - 10%. Time to take in washing.

Re: Other side of the Channel

BTW: assuming that the running costs are about the same on both sides of the channel (materials, VAT, cost of personnel), how is it that you guys in the UK get fleeced so much more than southside Channel marina's. Where does all that extra money go ?

As far as I know, prices are about the same from Boulogne to Den Helder.

Still, glad I'm only a visitor to the UK marina's, and not a regular.

BTW, laying at your own anchor, and having to pay for it ??? Municipalities would get lynched for trying that here.

Re: Other side of the Channel

Since land is so much more expensive on the South Coast of England compared N. France & Belgium, I suggest this is likely to be a significant cause of the difference between the rates. If you also compare the population catchments you will have some reason to expect greater demand. Finally, the number of inlets and harbours along the south coast, compared with, say France, is considerably smaller I would have thought, particularly if you exclude points west of Dorset.

What am I doing - justifying high charges? Better make it 3mg today.

Re: Land fo Rippoff?

Interesting. I have been wondering for a long time why about anything I look at is around 20% more expensive in the UK.
I look at chandlers in the UK vs. chandlers in Germany and I can't find a single thing that's cheaper in the UK and that's even true for goods made in the UK.
Then I picked up price lists from Swedish yards at a boatshow in Germany and then at the Southampton Boatshow, and guess what: Price sans VAT is noticably more on the UK pricelist.
Can anybody explain this to me? I used to think we had a free market economy....

Yes, I smell a 'rif off'rat. I called a Dutch dealer about a Bavaria. Basic ex-works price about the same, but the essential extra's are substantially more expensive in UK. £600 to antifoul, for goodness sake. I asked about buying, and was told that the factory didnt like supplying for eport. Then a load of stuff about warranty, claiming that as the warranty was dealer-supported, and not manufacturer-based.

Noy given up yet, but I really think this open-market thing isn't working for us yet

I came home tonight to a letter from Ocean Village. The good news is that they are not looking for payment in full in January for a berthing year which starts in April. The bad news is that they will be sending my "personal berth quotation" in January, and no rates have been announced yet.

why stay in lymington then? there are plenty of other marinas that charge much less, and even more radical you could try a river mooring.

my club mooring cost me nothing. yes, its drying (available 4 hrs either side) and yes its in the bristol channel. Ireland on the doorstep.

so you make your choice and pay the bill accordingly. be grateful you can afford £5000 to moor your toys and dont winge.

Re: Land fo Rippoff?

I bought a Bavaria and also looked at dealers in Holland. They seemed very helpful and responsive. You're right about the discount to be obtained on a boat already with kit. When I looked, early last December the £ was at its peak. When it fell a bit, the difference didn't seem that great, particularly when you add up the possible warranty problems and trip back to UK. I think the difference between the two prices was about 3%. The UK distributor will discount the kit - though not by much. Eventually, I got weedy and paid the UK dealer for it!
