Marina Fees Increase

Seems to be an astonishing increase in view of what appears to be a shrinking market. Only yesterday we were commenting on the number of places advertising moorings for rent in PBO. Does this have something to do with the well publicised port pilot pensions deficit?

we are lucky, we now have very nice digital pontoon ramp locks,( a saving was made as ours had been u/s for 6 months) new shower / toilet internal lamps, dredging has started only the extract in the toilets to do & were all ship shape.
Sod all is spent in the marina that is directly associated with wages, its a working marina / boatyard after all, with more boat lifts than any local marina.

I understand that qab has had 100% occupancy over the last 2 years so I guess they have the upper hand but based on responses here the increase appears excessive.
Agree the only answer is to vote with your feet.

Not relevant to your country but to mine. As from January next year our fees have gone up by 33% !!! :(

Annual fee for my boat (32 feet) will now be €2316 including VAT but excluding water & electricity; these are paid through a top-up from the security key fob when the service module on the pontoon is activated. Captive market -> demand bigger than supply -> cartel situation.

Puff

Compared with the Solent, that is a bargain......plus your weather will be a whole lot nicer! :D

Maybe, but on the basis of 24 years' marina tenancy in Plymouth there does seem to have been very little real variation in rates between Sutton, Mayflower, PYH and QAB over that time. Of course, there couldn't possibly be a cartel operating, so I assume that they are all pricing as tightly as possible and that the others (including King Point which after all is a satellite of Sutton) will be following QAB's increase.......

I will ask those berthing in Sutton what the increase has been there. Maybe there are unexplained reasons for the OPs increase. We too, on and off, have berthed in Plymouth for a similar time, and like you, have noticed the similarity in costs across all 4 main marinas.

Thanks LJS. Would be really interested in hearing what Sutton is proposing for 2015/16.

Yacht haven has increased this year but still under £400 /mtr . Not much in the way of facilities till April tho...... Infact no laundry facilities at all !!

We were in an MDL marina for a couple of years as pointed out not cheap but their freedom berthing more than makes up for it ,especially in the SW .

In the SW you only have QAB or the two in Torbay, nothing the until you go around Portland Bill.....freedom berthing in the SW is pretty limited unless you head off to France.

We have the TransEurope scheme which gives 50% off lots of places. Generally good but at Poole Town Quay the harbour surcharges and leccy meant it worked out at 20% off.

Or fancy Brixham and or Torquay both offering a free base for cruising to Dart ,Teignmouth and Exe . Don't underestimate Brixham as a free base for a while .Some lovely anchorages in and around the Bay .

I have this sneaky suspicion that in general we'll see increases for berthing for any payment arrangement other than everything up front for the year, which will miraculously be maintained at or close to this years fees so they can claim there's been little or no increase. But if you want to spread it over the year instead of giving them all your money up front it will start to cost substantially more. I have a philosophical objection to paying a service cost up front like that, I certainly don't run my household costs on that basis.
