How do I find out what our marina is charged for electricity? I could ask them but I'd like to find out independently.
Just want to know our per unit rate is correct.

I'm not sure you can. It's a commercial agreement between them and their supplier, and I can't think of anywhere it would be publicly available nor any reason they would have to tell you. Short of actually taking them to court for overcharging, anyway, which I assume is the angle you're thinking of :)

Well its got to be less than 17p per kWh/Unit that based on what Southern Electricity charge somebody on a pay as you go contract (worst type), Premier will have better deal than that. As the Marina can only charge you at cost I do wonder if they can/do amortise their local distribution costs (breakers, cables, sockets etc on pontoon) into the charge.

MDL Charge Electricity at cost - I seem to remember something that says they are not allowed to "resell" electricity at any other price that the tariff they are charged.

Obviously this only applies to Berth holders on a meter - over night stays are another issue

Can't find any ref to it at all on their website. Just to be clear...I'm very happy with the service our marina (Swanwick) are providing in every way. Always very helpful and accommodating to us anyway and I've absolutely no cause for complaint. It's just that I've been monitoring our leccy usage as our bills are quite high and it occurred to me I've no way of checking their cost to our charge.
Purely a curiosity thing but now it's bugging me.

Ah mis read that :o
as you no doubt already know they are not allowed by law to re sell for more than they pay for it but can levy a "service" charge

I didn't know that til a few weeks ago which is why it's now playing on my mind. I would assume the 'service' charge comes in the berthing fee tho'?

Hi Lisa,

If you remember, before Swanwick changed to the new system of electric supply charges, the 'service charge' was shown as a separate item on your electric useage invoice.

Regarding their current electric costs, why don't you just ask them....they can either just tell you, or tell you it's confidential.....guess which one I think they will answer!!

Cheers, Allan

Hi Allan
Was trying to find an old bill but I've clearly had a sort out and chucked them. Our charge per unit is 16.8p incl VAT according to the office. No idea if that's good value or not.

Mercury are 12p per unit plus 5% VAT and £10 a quarter service charge plus you have to buy a metermaid from £113 or rental from £4.35 a week (and £120 deposit)

A marina operator with multiple sites will likely negotiate a bulk electricity purchase and as substantial 3 phase consumers will likely pay around £0.10 per kWH (typival of my office block consumers BTW).

So add VAT at 5% that becomes £0.105 per kWH.

They can't make a profit from the power itself and indeed a properly run marina will incur considerable costs in delivering that power safely and compliantly.

But what is clear is that the service delivery seems to represent around 70% of the base cost.

I think they are making an amazing amount of extra cash from your 'Service' charge.

As a converse example last year our yard decided to increase berthing for me at 40' by £10 per month of £0.25 / ft, but at the same time they decided to waive charges for electricity, as they figured the casual (non liveaboard) usage did not warrant them charging. Liveaboards are genuinely charged based upon metered usage.

So who's taking the p155 and getting away with it ?
