I read somewhere that by law marinas could only charge you for elcetricty used plus a small admin charge - does anyone know if this is the case ?

Thanks
Ken

I believe you are correct, although the new wheeze is ....

You must use our provided safety checked cable £400, & have a new one next year... according to eu regulations, or some such similar bilge

the law did change- most marinas now do as you describe

think mdl charge £8 per quarter admin. units used at cost hire (£3.50 p/w) of metered lead or buy one outright for £165. Certainly nothing about changing the lead every year.

Re.David Bagshaw....Which marinas are charging £400 for a cable & demanding puchase of a new one each year?.

Yes law did change Offelc or what ever they are called like offwat for water, but for electricty.

They can't mark up the price of the rate per unit, but as has been said, will apply other chargers perhaps /forums/images/icons/wink.gif. Just got my Leckie bill in and the rate is 6.5p / unit - thought that was a bit high, will have to check it out.

I pay a minimal unit charge, but as soon as I plug in during a month then I have to pay an admin charge of £5, another £60 per year, I'd rather pay a higher unit cost!

Hi,

If they insist on a new cable every year to meet EU reg's, surely if you turn up as a visitor and wish to plug in, they should check your cable to make sure it is less than 12 months old and safe.

Check out OFGEM (office for gas and electricty markets) website. You will see that the law changed 1/1/2003 to come into line with caravan parks.Basically marinas can only charge WHAT THEY PAY for electricty (IE No Mark Up).They are allowed to charge a maximum in each region of the UK based on each of the local electricy boards pricing ranges, but in practice 6.5p per unit is about the maximun. If they pay standing charges on top they can split this equally amongst all users. They are not allowd to 'dress up' other charges to compensate themselves for the loss in revenue. Most marinas dont seem to be fully up to speed on the legislation. I had to copy the information to my own operators to get them to change and I recently stayed at Poole Haven where they didnt seem to know about the policy. Importantly these rules apply both to permanent and VISITORS !

The figure was tongue in cheek, but I am sure some one will try the ruse.
