thinking of a run th coast from penzance to folkestone, but havent been in that neck og the woods for a long time. What would be your guess at the average overnight rate for a 9m or 30ft boat?

When we did this run we mostly used the buoys at Lymington for a reasonable cost and a very short dinghy to the shore. Yarmouth charge(d) considerably less on weekdays and was usable.

Last year between Portsmouth and Helford in a 39 footer we were paying about £50 for marina berths and £25 for moorings. A bit less in some places but I can't recall all the details.

You will need to be shallow draft to get into Folkestone and even shallower to deal with the hard sand at low water. Not much further to Dover though.

I suggest you take a look at the packages offered by Premier. They offer two that can provide significant savings over their standard visitor rate. One is a block of 5 (or maybe 7?) nights to be used any time during the year.
The other (Coastal Cruiser?) gives you 30 nights, also to be used anytime during the year. This is particularly good value as it gives you almost annual rates for a visitor stay. Limited (7/10?) continuous nights at a single marina but they can be flexible over this.
Some marinas (Falmouth and Swanwick from memory) are excluded but you still have useful stops in the Solent (Portsmouth, Southsea, Chichester), Brighton and Eastbourne.

Jeez! At those prices it might pay to sail across to Boulogne and overnight there! :D

And you could get a decent dinner.
Northern French marinas are often council run and they know that boaters bring spending €€ to the area.

British marinas are often run by property companies who know the view of boats puts up property ££.

In which model do the boaters get the best deal?

Well since we can’t get a French council to run our marinas I’ll go with private companies please. Uk councils can’t even manage the bins and pot holes. Ryde is council run, but you’ll want a tractor if you’re visiting ?
