Marina charges

my marina want to charge me more to moor up bows-to!

Forgive me for jumping in on an old discussion but I think this is relevant - I have a question about marina finger length..

My boat is a Fairline Targa 34, the key thing being the only way to get on and off her is via the transom (no gap in the guard rail on the beam and it's a really high freeboard in any event) - as I spend a lot of time on board I want to be able to moor bows to (so I can get some privacy in the cockpit).

The problem I'm having is that my marina (who for now will remain nameless) despite charging me a pretty substantial sum each year for mooring don't provide a finger that's long enough to reach to the transom when the boat's moored bows-to. I have asked them about this and they say if I want a longer finger then I'll have to pay for a larger berth (eg pay for a 45ish ft boat sized mooring even though my boat is only 34ft - which is about £1500-£2000 per annum more!)

This strikes me as being really unreasonable (and frankly, somewhat money grabbing) but I'm interested to hear what others think of this. Do you think what the marina are saying is reasonable or not?

I think the issue boils down to - should one be allowed to moor bows-to if one wants to and therefore ought the marina to provide a finger that is sufficiently long to get on and off a boat when moored in this way. At the end of the day they do their pricing based on *boat length* not *finger length* don't they? I'm paying to moor a 34 foot boat (actually with reference to the earlier posts on this thread I'm probably paying to moor a 36ft boat, but that's by the by) - so surely I should be able to tie it up whichever way round I want, or is it me that's being unreasonable here?

PS please don't say "buy a proper boat (ie one with sails!) and you'd be able to hop on at the beam" ;) As it happens my preference is for a yacht but my partner doesn't enjoy the heeling motion and was felt our daughter was safer in the cockpit of a motor boat rather than a yacht - and no amount of assurances from me about harnesses etc would sway her alas!

Thanks in advance for any input on this :)
