marina channel 80 and hand-held radio

Steve, there is a manual here if you haven't got one which should help you to check whether it is USA or Intrernational and reset it:

http://www.icom.co.jp/manual/external/transceivers/IC-M31.pdf

It isn't clear from your first post whether you have physically tried calling the marina on 80, only that you say you can hear just their transmissions, not other stations calling them which is how it should be. Are you now saying that you have tried transmitting on 80 and have got no response ?

Unfortunateley it's not possible to obtain the Operators Certificate by merely reading the booklets. You are correct about the content of the syllabus, indeed the items you mentioned were covered. My concern is not about correct use of the radio or radio ettiquette. It is that I'm unable to call on channel 80 with my hand-held Icom IC-M31. Perhaps it is something to do with the functionality of the set. I'll check to see if it's the international model (i bought it 2nd hand so not sure of its origin).

Sounds to me as if your ICOM is set to USA channels, in which case Ch80 is simplex, and you will hear other yachts calling the marina, but not the marina responses.

At the left of the ICOM screen there should be the letter I if set to International, or U if set to USA. To change from one to the other group push DIAL for 1 second.

[/ QUOTE ] Attending a course is compulsory now is it? 1985 when I got my OCC !
Read the booklets, took the test, walked up the road and bought the radio IIRC.

(before anybody queries it no I do not have DSC, GMDSS and all that stuff. The radio I bought in 1985 will hopefully see me out! )

Yes, I did the same in 1980. I have since sat through a half-day class for the DSC update -- a total waste of time, in my opinion.
