Marina Berthing Prices

Must have read my mind as I did fire off an email to Queen Annes Battery seeking their prices to compare to Falmouth. So far I haven't had a response. Maybe I will try MF too. Thanks.

Try Charles at Mayflower, he's a really nice guy and runs a very nice business. I've no skin in the game but have only had pleasant experiences there. You are able to tender across to Royal William yard from there, it's really come on since the mob moved out. Well worth a trip down for a look see.

Don't know what it's like down west but around Poole and West Solent I have heard of a few cases of marina's being willing to turn a blind eye to the genuine LOA of a boat, perhaps dropping it into a lower category, and know one case where it's definitely true.

Instead of asking for a straight discount ask for an introductory offer, like 14 months For the price of 12. Doesn't sound too much but it's a lot more than 10% off. But like someone else here said they need a lot of vacant berths so that they can fleece the tourists!

Thanks, will do. So far the prices for Plymouth seems to indicate a 20% saving over Falmouth but haven't got around to Mayflower yet. Will have to weigh it up. Hadn't thought of Plymouth before but it seems to be worthy of more research!

Re: Marina Berthing Prices Wales - Jersey or gibraltar

Hello Folks

I was wondering and OPEN to any Advice.

I am recently new to sailing and have purchased a 44' Nauticat Based on the South West coast. Devon..

Marina Berthing is around £7400 for the year..

Due to the bad weather over winter and very little just 2 days - South Spain or Gibraltar Seemed a good option..

However I live in the North West (Lancashire - Merseyside area )

I have mulled over a few different options

Liverpool 1 hr drive (tidal) 10 miles / 15miles + to Sand bar before open water (2 hrs @ 6knots) but Very handy to visit boat and do jobs if Needed.

WALES
Conwy - 2 hrs Drive (Tidal )

Port Dinorwic 2 1/2 hrs drive (Tidal) Not too sure if big enough for 44' boat But seems nice area

Pllwheli 3 hrs drive (Tidal - someone pointed out it may silt up I have a 2.0m draft. But it is probably easier sailing in the Bay for a Novice like myself.
POSSIBLY When have more Experience SAIL SOLO - short of crew..

Other Places People have Mentioned

Channel Island
JERSEY (Not too sure on prices of Berthing [Sent email] or any restriction on tides) Flights are reasonable from Liverpool.
Not easy accessible as Liverpool or Wales for a quick visit

France
Marina of MARINA FOLEUX Up River Been reading Places like this get cold in Winter and need to drain tanks plus May not allow Electric connections due to some fires in French marinas.

Gibraltar
Good Weather -- only down side is the delivery cost to take from Brixham to Gibraltar, Awaiting Quotes
now that my work contract is finished. So Offshore industry maybe quiet for another year. So cutting costs.
Still Awaiting email reply on Berthing prices.
Not easy accessible as Liverpool or Wales for a quick visit

La Linea - South Spain ?? [Sent 2 emails but nor reply]
Good weather - Probably nice bars and pleasant area.
Still Awaiting email reply on Berthing prices
Not easy accessible as Liverpool or Wales for a quick visit

Cartagena South Spain
Had a reply approx €6500 for the year. Think that is the total price

So Have some Decisions to make

ANY ADVICE FROM FELLOW SAILORS WOULD BE MOST APPRECIATED ON YOUR EXPERIENCES AND THOUGHT ON the BESt Places to Berth for my Situation

Best regards
Graham

You have the ideal boat for the west coast of Scotland and surprised that is not on the list.

However, other peoples' experiences are rarely much help in these decisions as they are very personal and depend on personal circumstances and expectations. All of your alternatives are possible but the flyaway ones only make sense if you are prepared to cope with the inconvenience and cost of travel - plus have a lifestyle patter that allow you to take the longer breaks to justify the travel. Also if you are going to be Med based then perhaps you have bought the wrong boat.

Actual marina costs end up being a minor part of the overall costs of running a 44' boat so a saving of a couple of £ks a year is neither here nor there.

You have to decide what sort of boating you want to do and then determine the best place to do it - and the best type of boat for the job.

I wouldn't personally say that La Linea is a pleasant area. I've walked/drove through it before on the way to Gib and would say it's a bit of a run down/slummy area with not much going for it. maybe I've missed the good bits.

Re: Marina Berthing Prices Wales - Jersey or gibraltar

Hi Tranona
Thanks for the Response, How not really interested in Scotland reminds me too much of work, As I worked out of Aberdeen for 20 years Ha..

Yes My Boat is a Cruiser Adventure boat not a racer, keeps something in reserve for bad weather.. Pity about the lack of space for Sunbathing.

Mediterranean I mentioned this because the weather should be better in Winter than UK.. Plus Possible easier sailing for a Novice like myself if I wanted to go Solo sailing,

As I work offshore and have plenty of days leave -(When I get anther job) easy to take time off Just a hassle to fly.. Even if I went to Jersey. which may be an option
But Jersey Will have the same weather in Winter - Slight shelter in the Bay. Not too sure how Tidal it is.

If you are after year round sailing then you need to go further south for example to the Canaries. It is possible to sail in the winter in Southern Spain and the Algarve, but mostly there is little activity in the winter in the Med. Access by air is another issue which is why southern Spain is popular as many places are well served by budget airlines.

If you are serious about warm weather singlehanded sailing then still surprised at your choice of boat. You will find that sort of boat very uncomfortable in hot weather. Look at what boats are actually used in the Med, and unless you want the adventure of sailing there, probably better to buy one there.
