We are presently in Punta de la Mona, leaving in the direction of Almerimar tomorrow, weather permitting. Almerimar is high on our list of possible wintering places.

A Spanish yachtsman has just suggested the Mar Menor as a good wintering place. Any views, and which marinas would be worth considering? We don't have an unlimited budget but will require electricity, water, internet via wifi and either satellite/cable tv or somewhere we can put our own dish on the hard. Many thanks. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have friends who over-wintered in Los Nietos. It is a tiny harbour in a tiny village but there is regular public transport to Cartagena. They certainly have water and electricity but I have my doubts about WiFi. If you like somewhere small, check it out.

Puerto de Tomas Maestre at the entrance to Mar Menor is a huge modern marina. However, it is at the northern end of La Manga which is a huge soul-less strip of concrete apartments. There is no other way out.

If you want good facilities and an active live-aboard life keep going to Almerimar.

sail into torrevieja harbour, anchor off the beach and go ashore and talk to the english yachtsmen who will tell you who you should be talking to for arrangements for a winter berth. torrevieja has all the good facilities you will need including a good wifi set-up and 2 airports within 40minutes both with regular budget fights to uk and elsewhere.
hard to find better on that coast

Thanks, both of you....will look into Torrevieja, though it is a bit further north than we had intended. Almerimar seems to be getting most of the votes as we travel around so I wonder if they will have room. The Med marinas are certainly very full and we have been turned away and met many others who have had problems as they are not well kitted out for anchoring.

Why not give Almerimar a call on the phone?
They speak good english in the office and I know they still had plenty of room three months back.
Have also learnt another pal who like you headed back there for winter storage last month - but one phone call will give you the answer.
Numbers in the Pilot.
Cheers
JOHN

Do any of you guys or gals know what they charge for overwintering (in the water, living aboard) at these above mentioned places? It will be a year or two before we get there, but an idea would be appreciated.

Thanks

Pops

Amazed to hear this. I left my boat in Almerimar winter 89/90 and we
were practically the only boat afloat. And it wasn't cheap!!
WiFi connection is going to transform my daughter's attitude to sailing.
In fact there are now about ten cafe/restaurants in Brighton offering
free connection, the guy behind me at lunchtime was drinking water!!

We have just had Fuga re-launched to reserve a berth at Almerimar, as the marina is already filling up for the winter. About two weeks ago our 'rep' down there, Mary Colson, who is the CA HLR, reported space to be running out.

We arrived there at the end of the last winter season (May) and there was certainly an active social life and VHF net running for those who wanted it.

While the hinterland is all plastic greenhouse, Almerimar itself is not unpleasant and has everything you want. Airport Almeria with Ryan and Easy.

We did not choose to get stuck there, but it has worked out well. It is the cheapest place for berthing, and out of the water as well, with reasonable yard facilities, chandlery. Costs approx. 10 euros per day out of season for 12m boat, double that in high season.

Will be returning to the boat hopefully in November, and hope to see you there.

Thanks, John, and everyone who replied. We are now here in Almerimar and signing the winter contract tomorrow. I think that we are getting one of the last 15m berths available (and I think that's true, not sales BS, as there are not many holes around and a local broker who I know from the past has confirmed this).

I'd like to meet up with any forumnites who are down here; we are down at the far eastern end....do please say hello. I'd like to know about the VHF net.

Almerimar - diver wanted

By the way, my shaft anode has fallen off and I urgently want to get a diver to put the new one on (I have the anode). I was wondering if any forumnite would like to do it for a small consideration? So many people say that they would like to earn a bit and it would be a pleasure to help. Otherwise, can anyone recommend a decent pro diver who can be trusted to fit a shaft anode? Many thanks.

Re: Almerimar - diver wanted

Lemain,

I think all the advise your getting on Torrevieja, Almerimar, etc. is good. I sail down to Malaga every year from Barcelona and know the coast quite well. I'd also check at Cartagena, where the prices are very reasonable. As for the diver, just a suggestion: why don't you have the boat pulled out a "suspension" in Spanish, which is having it on the slings just enough time for you to change the anode yourself. The yards usually do this at lunch time and it will probably cost you less than the pro diver.

good luck
Jose

Re: Almerimar - diver wanted

José, thanks for that...we are now happily settled in Almerimar and things look very promising for a fun winter. The local diver attached to the marina did the anode for €60 cash, which wasn't too bad.
