Is this situation endemic across the UK?

Yesterday I tried several "reputable" Mercruiser engineers based around the Clyde with the intention of having my engine and leg serviced before the usual rush.

I never spoke to "the man that does that sort thing" as he was out and about. At close of play today only one joker had rang me back and quoted me 500 quid for the privelidge of a couple of hours work... I wish I'd become a spannerman on the boats instead of cars, they must be raking it in, as and when they wish to work.

Is it the same everywhere else? Can anyone recommend a decent engineer up here in not so sunny Scotland??

Thanks

Clyde.

Try Crossan Outboards

Eddie has done many jobs very well for us over the years.

"Mercury and Mercruiser dealer and servicing, catering for most makes of inboards and outboard engines."

Number is - 01389 754 363

Why not do it yourself, it's not that hard to do ???

have you tried the mercruiser agent in largs marina. his name is gordon he has done jobs for me on my boat which has got volvo engines very knowledgeable and i think he charges around £40.00 per hour.their telephone number is01475687139.

I know it's not in the same league, but many years ago I had a Mariner 4 outboard. Crossan serviced it for me and it was like a new engine when it came back, and from what I remember reasonably priced. I think that they stopped doing Mariners shortly after that but am not sure. I thought they were very good.

yes as someone else has already said - its no different really to a car - air oil and fuel filter changes plus and oil change - the leg is usually just oil change (unless its a major service then you will need to change the bellows ) but I did it all my self this year - took me a whole weekend as it was my first attempt and I wanted to be careful, and cost me parts only - very much worht it and Im not scared of the engines anymore.

I also had to do a head gasket change too, as it had a water leak - but this only took a couple of weekends and I know that it was done properly (and found out a lot about the engine as well )

Thanks for the info guys.

I know it isn't hard to do, but I'm too busy right now to do it myself. However this may change soon. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I was just canvassing opinions on the lack of interested parties who wish to work on boats. It reminds me very much of the "Deep sucking in of breath" and "chin scratching" of days gone by when cars appeared for mystic cures by the oily rag soothsayer who'd utter such proficies as "MMMMMMM you need a head gasket done? Let's see (very long pause)..if your lucky and the moons in its equinox with the sun I think I could fit you in, bring it in next Tuesday".

The motor trade was slated for this yonks ago, it's about time the marine trade caught up.

Thanks for the advice again.

Cheers

I had my first service done by gordon (north western marine) at largs at end of last season - he seamed very good to me, spent 15 mins on phone after carrying out service just talking about what I should & shouldn't do.
I have used DDZ (speak to Carlo) as well but they are not mercruiser agents if your boats still under warranty (girl in office is very crabbit mind)

have used crossan as well in the past but you would have to trail to balloch

just had a thought -your boat isnt very old is it - I seem to remember Gordon saying 3 years before leg needs service !

Ah, that sounds good news to me about the leg!!! Thanks.

Oh, and your right about the crabbit girl @ DDZ...they quoted £500...seems a bit steep to me.

I can get all the parts I need from Keypart for about £100...Guess what I'm doing with my days off next week!!!

Thanks again. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif CHEERS!!
