As always I'm overwhelmed by the response from the forumites. I've received several links to workshop manuals for the saildrive. It would appear to be a not uncommon problem and one that Volvo keep quiet about. The likelihood is that it is the clutch on the forward gear and hopefully I (or rather Mathew the Mechanic) can remove the unit from the non-operational engine/saildrive. Hopefully this can be done with the boat in the water although opinions are divided on this.
Some of you were kind enough to offer more tangible help. I'm a great believer in self-help and to this end I try and supplement my pension by writing. I have several books available on Amazon under the name Peter N Bernfeld. I won't put any links as I do not want to turn this into an advert and it might in any case break forum rules. If you'd like to help, buy a book. That way I can give you something in return.
Once again many thanks to one and all. In a minor way I've been able to 'pass on the help' because I lent an outboard prop to somebody on the Sail Indonesia rally. It doesn't begin to repay the help I've had over the last couple of years but you have to start somewhere!
