I was told white patchy areas that have appeared on my green coloured hull were a known manufacturing fault. It cannot be polished out, needs painting. What would cause this?

My limited understanding of production, if its a standard production hull, is that it was a white hull which was subsequently painted, sprayed, green - specially for you or the original owner. The spray up was not perfect. After commissioning the hull was cleaned by the owner (abrasives - Vim, and vigour) .....or the green pigment is sensitive to UV, seawater....

Either the white is on the surface of the green, UV degradation, 'chalking'... in which case it might polish out,
or, the white is inside the green, the green layer has worn off or chemically changed all the way through, so it won't polish out.

it should be clear from looking at scratches etc whether the green is gelcoat or paint?
A few minutes with some high-number wet sandpaper will tell you if the white is superficial.

Important to determine if it is a green gelcoat or painted over a standard white gel coat. Dark tinted gel coats are well known for fading and "chalking" leading to white patches or blooming. Polishing out is often a temporary fix, Permanent fix is to have it sprayed with a 2 pack such as Awlgrip. If painted then the paint has worn through and exposed the underlying white gel coat. This would be less likely as the whole point in paunting is to avoid the problems of coloured gel coats.

"Manufacturing fault" is difficult to define. It happens with some boats and not with others.

It's a dark green coloured gel coat, not faded, the white shows through like liquid spill within the gelcoat! Happened also on some of the dark red hulls apparently. I am selling the boat which was at a reduced price so no problem. It doesn,t effect the integrity, it just looks like it has been in the water for a couple of weeks, similar to salt on dark hulls. I would keep her but need 4K funds to finish a car restoration project.... sad, little use 2003 boat otherwise, decks nice and shiny etc. I may see if I can struggle through and keep her. My wife, a teacher, has just gone part time and clearly has no respect for my toy budget!!
