Manual windlass

Despite what I am led to believe in the adverts, not everyone wants an electric windlass.But where can I find a big manual one. Lofrans only sell the one , and I don't think it would hold my 12 tonner?

Any help would be appreciated.

My previous Moody 44 (probably 12 tonnes all in) originally had the Lofrans Royal windlass that I used to haul up a 25kg delta and 50m of 10mm chain. It coped fine in normal conditions but was just a bit slow, which is why I went to an electric Lofrans Tigres windlass in the end.

[/ QUOTE ]I don't mean to be pedantic, but surely the windlass is not intended to take the full force of the rode? The windlass is intended to recover the anchor and chain when the force has been relieved, e.g. by motoring into into the wind/sea. Once the anchor is set, the chain should be made fast to a strong point(s) and not left so that the windlass is taking the strain.

but they seem to be mostly powered.....

Maybe have a look around and see if you can find a second hand Simpson Lawrence 555 Sea Tiger manual anchor windlass for sale - seriously powerful beasts - some pals on a 19 tonne Colin Archer had one (with 3/8" chain and a 45 lb CQR), and it worked well for them.

I'm glad there was one serious one. I had thought of the Tigres, but really want a manual windlass.

I have a Simpson-Lawrence Anchorman, gypsy only for 8mm chain, on the floor next to me here in Brighton. If you want it, PM me.

I have had two Royals ( on different boats) and have been extremely pleased with them. I only use the double action ratchet to break out the anchor and then haul in the rest by hand pretty quickly. These windlasses are absolutely bulletproof, and essentially maintenance free apart from regular douses in fresh water to get rid of the salt. When anchoring, I always rig a nylon rope shock absorber from a hook on the chain to a substantial cleat, taking the strain off the windlass. Best price I found for Royals was Schwenkner Water Sports ( they advertise in PBO and/or YM)
