Manual for older Mariner 3.5 outboard

Hi,

Just wondered if anyone had electronic copies of either users manual, or repair manual for this outboard. It's the older two stroke model with bulbous engine casing, model 364L in my case. It's not the same as the later 3.0 and 3.3.

You should be able to find the user manual in the "download center" of Brunswick Marines website: http://download.brunswick-marine.com/download/main;jsessionid=105vjo07c1lcd?type=corp

Its not always easy to find the right manual though. Often better to not search by year but list all and look at likely ones until you find the correct one. It'll be there somewhere.

There is a year identifier there too if you are not sure of the year

There appears to be a workshop manual ( non OEM ... probably Seloc) avaialble at http://boatinfo.no/lib/library.html# which covers all models 2 to 40 hp from 1965 to 1989

I think that's correct, this model was OEM from Yamaha or from the same original source. That link looks promising, but isn't actually a download link, instead it takes you some pages to search by manufacturer, and neither Yamaha nor Mercury-Mariner list a 3.5hp of the appropriate date (somewhere around 1979 or 1980).

For the avoidance of doubt, can we eliminate the Yamaha/Mariner 3.5AC, which dates from the 70s? It is air cooled (no impeller) ? Picture attached. I am guessing it is not one of these as their code was 642S or L.

Sorry, been offline. It does look like that one. I've been given an owner's manual, what's a bit odd is that it seems it's water cooled for the gearing and prop drive. Sort of worst of both worlds. I imagine it'll be pretty noisy if I get it to run.

water cooled gearcase ? yes it's immersed in water. Theres no water pump is there?

Finned cylinder block and head air cooled by a flywheel fan.
 
It does look like that one.

If it is the 642, I have manual/maintenance/parts list and a few spares. I still have a Mariner branded one of 1975ish vintage in the garage that has done less than 10hours since new (I took it out of its box a couple of years ago). We keep it as a backup. Its a little noisier that the Maltas we normally use but easy to repair and maintain.

Thanks for all the comments, I think I'm almost sorted out now after a bit of dismantling and freeing of seized parts. It starts and runs well. The only thing is that I'm not getting any water from the tell-tales half way up the shaft. According to the owner's manual this should only show when the engine's in gear, but I'm not sure whether that's because the impeller (if these is one?) is driven from the prop (like the later 2.2) or whether the prop wash itself is supposed to provide the flow. There's what looks like a water intake just behind and above the prop, and I can blow freely through there. If that's supposed to provide the cooling water flow, it may just be that it doesn't work when there's just a bucket of water.

No there is no water pump. It just relies on wash from the prop. I'd doubt if you'll get any significant water flow, if any, when static . Stick it on the dinghy and have a look when running flat out at WOT to see if you get any water from the tell tales / relief ports then

Just in case you are not aware, it is the long shaft version built in 1975. The only difference I found between the Mariner and Yamaha branded items was that the Mariner did not have a drain pushbutton on the carb bowl which makes it more important to run the carb dry at shut down.

I read the serial number as 642-307767 which is a 1979 number ITYWF (642-307171 to 642-310295)

Sounds like it has a Pitot tube where pressure builds up underway and cools the leg, nothing at rest.(but I may be thinking of the early Yamaha 2 hp which definitely had the tube and air cooling for the top).Going back to mid-70's One I had did not like canal work at all because it could not raise the necessary speed to get the arrangement working!

Before getting it running I spent some time freeing up seized bolts etc. Also put new fuel in. Afterwards I changed the gear oil. Is there anything else that should be checked just as a precaution?

Oil/ grease, as appropriate, all moving bits and pieces

Re-check gear oil soon ... be prepared to fit new gearcase seals if there is water getting in

My experience is from 10 years ago:-
Faced with the same problem, I bought non-runners on eBay and cannabalised them.
Also BHG in Lymington sometimes had bits at the back of a cupboard and I seem to remember getting a gasket set fro Coastal Rides.
