I have 4 different gps sets (yes I dont know what for either) and all 4 have different waypoints in them. In an effort to commonise, I have tried various free gps programs but invariably hit problems with limits or file types etc. Downloading into databases or spreadsheets hasnt worked either. In fact the only way I have made progress is by using Mapsource, the map program that came with my Garmin road GPS.

Has anybody found a really quick and effective way of downloading, manipulating, and uploading loads of waypoints?

GPSU works for me. However, I use a basic program to manipulate. I transfer from the PC to a handheld Garmin and then to the 128. You could get the free demo version of GPSU and have a go.

I'll second GPSU, not least because the guy who wrote it is a sailor (!) and spends a good deal of his time supporting it. Buy it - it's only about £30 but do try it first - the only drawback is the need to scan your own charts and the lack of ability to stitch them together. There's a very good community (forum) on Yahoo for it.

I use a free browser running in linux (free) with avg anti virus (free) and zone alarm firewall (free) to look at this website (free) etc. So paying for software is something I try not to do. But both GPSU and GPS trackmaker gave me file problems downloading the waypoints and then exporting in a format to allow for manipulation, so I wouldnt be inclined to pay for them anyway.

Looks like I will have to stick with mapsource
