Man overboard recovery practice

Reply from RNLI

Hello Roger,

This sounds an excellent idea for yachtsmen to practice and experiment.

However, our lifeboat crew are not trained in this type of recovery and would not be able to offer any advice. Recovery into a rib with four strong lifeboatmen is quite a different thing.

Thanks for asking, it was a good idea.

Chattinglil is coming with me so us and Gitane are already in Bradwell.

I have a liferaft for us to inflate and play with but I'm not sure what to do with it afterwards as I hoping to go off on the boat for a few days after MOB and don't want to take it with me. Perhaps we can recycle it at Marconi. Simon??

Anyone else?

Not sure if you are looking for of volunteers to be rescued. I have a wet suit, so the cold water should not be a problem. I'll be happy to jump in and be the MOB. However I am 6' 3" and weigh well over (too over??!!) 15 st, so it would be a bit of a challenge to get me back on board.

Let me know if you need a volunteer.

One volunteer is better than ten pressed men Ron. It might take ten pressed men to get you back.......

I emailed the Commodore and moorings sec. at the sailing club (Marconi) and they're happy to allow us to pick up some moorings (should be some free at this time of year) and use club facilities eg Barbeque.

There's a Topper open that weekend however, so we'd need to keep clear of the club hard during their activities (not a problem) and Saturday is better than Sunday a) for me personally and b) because it avoids club racing which is on Sunday too.

The tide's flooding all morning on the 1st so we could aim to meet at mid-day ish and run the main activity on the Saturday afternoon. A BBQ in the evening (and we'll get the bar open if it isn't anyway) then folk can enjoy a quiet night on the moorings (weather permitting of course!) have a quiet Sunday morning and take the ebb out of the river on Sunday afternoon.

I'll happily bring coals and cooking implements if everyone is OK to bring their own meat / fish etc.

If there are other Marconi members reading this or planning to come please let me know...

Was going to ask about mooring availability. If we make it, our ground tackle is frankly rubbish (ancient CQR, way too short a length of old rusty chain and a manual windlass thats harder work than hauling the anchor up by hand! It's slated for total replacement as soon as I've completed the 396 items ahead of it on the to do list!)

I would have liked to attend, unfortunately my upholstery is being collected on the 25th and the new stuff is being delivered/fitted on the 2nd.
