MAN Engines

In the early 90s, MAN did have an 820hp engine in their range, but it was the V10. Back then, the V8 was only available with a 680hp output.
I don't know exactly when the V8 was upped to 800hp (it was definitely 800 and not 820, btw), but it was in the mid/late 90s, anyway.

Correct, somehow I almost mix the two cause they where offered in most cases in the same boats, and the numbers of the engines are quite similar.

Ahem, sorry to correct you again W, but I can't think of one single boat where the V10/820 and the V8/800 were offered as alternative installations, for the simple reason that the engines weren't contemporary: during the V10/820 years, the V8 was only available as 680hp.
And the block length was significantly different, of course - though I can think of one boat which was available with either V10 or V8 blocks: the Fer 165.
But the choice was between the MAN V10/820 or the MTU V8/775 (the latter being what markc of this parish has on his boat).
I suppose that the MAN V8/680 wasn't considered good enough for the boat size/weight...

With regard to the MAN V8/1200hp engines I have no experience but personally I'd much rather have the V12 engines which I would bet have more torque and are smoother

That's an easy to win bet, if I've ever seen one! :encouragement:

Does it really matter about th extra stress in modern engines? This is assuming marine/truck engines are anything like car engines. Modern car engines are far more stressed than say 20 years ago and I would say more reliable than ever.

My previous car has a 4.7l v8 with 420hp. Current car 4.0l v8 with 503hp - so far more stressed. The current car I would expect to be more reliable than the previous - although the previous only ever had a very minor oil leak.

I was speaking re the Man V8 680hp and or V10 820hp.

Italcraft Ipanema 53, Posillipo 52/55 Technema, early Ferretti 165.
Anyways in most Italian builds of the time, where the V8 went in so did the V10.
I think the Brits Princess V55, Fairline 56 Squadron only had space for the V8 - 800hp variant.
