I’ve had a quotation for 2 x 800hp V8 engines and the generator servicing via Sud Marine, some of the parts/oil prices seem a bit heavy, I can get an engineer to carry out the servicing and I supply parts/oil, with a view to me doing the work in future, now is it worth buying the bits in the U.K. or are French prices generally on par ?
 
I have MTU engines, which are very similar. MTU France charged me £4k for the engine service, so that persuaded me to DIY from then on. I find that it's way cheaper buying parts in the UK and shipping them to France. It's certainly worth taking the time to find OEM matches for the filters as they will be much cheaper. Best of luck persuading a French engineer to use parts from the U.K. They’ll give some cock and bull story about not being able to warrant their work if they don’t supply the parts but of course the real reason is that they make a far higher mark up on the parts than their labour. I use an excellent MAN engineer in Antibes but the best arrangement I’ve ever persuaded him to do is ship the parts to my UK company with zero TVA and then I ship them back again. The delivery costs of doing that is less than the French TVA

Analogy warning folks :) = Think VW beetle ....yup that simple !
Hopefully won,t get flamed for that :)

Remember to turn on the ignition to activate / open the fuel solinoid.....to be able to successfully use the hand priming pump when bleeding air out .

With the Racors ......tip fill up the tanks level higher than the top of the lid .Turn off the tank cock to engine .
changes cartridges then with the lid loose gently open the tank cock and it auto fills .......simultaneously tighten down the T handle on the lid as fuel seeps out because it’s full .....no air left .Wrap a bit of old rag round to collect the excess .
 
Hi If you go to Mann Filters online they have a parts matrix which gives the original part no and a mann filter equivilent. Bear in mind that Volvo get mann to make some of there filters and they are three times the price. They also do a marine book if you can get hold of one with all the parts cross referenced for all brands of engines.

M, it's true that your blocks are the same as the ones in the OP boat (as well as in mine). That's the "OM-442", as the original builder Mercedes called them.
But there are many differences between the MTU and MAN marinization (the former being generally superior than the latter, imho), so I'm not sure of how many parts can actually be exchanged between the two brands.
For instance, just by visual memory, I can remember that air filters are completely different.
Besides, there are two advantages with MAN vs. MTU:
Firstly, MAN kept using the OM-440 series block for MUCH longer than MTU, of which in fact your TE93 engines are the very last version ever used by MTU. Which probably explains why they don't make courses on them anymore, as you mentioned in the other thread.
Secondly, some of MAN parts are also available through their trucks dealers, obviously at more decent prices.
Bottom line, I'm afraid that generally speaking any non-exchangeable MTU parts will be always more expensive than MAN counterparts.
And in my experience, also their dealer network is generally dearer on labour - not that MAN dealers are cheap, anyway!

Agreed P, I meant 'similar' in the broad sense, not the swapping of parts sense :p

The stake is in the ground, the kindling is in place at the base of the stake and Matthew Hopkin is on retainer.
