Mallorca to Cannes - Route

JFM - many thx. We would go via Cuiitadella I agree - we like it. And just how eye watering is Porqueelles fuel out of interest? Assume you can buy fuel at Toulon if they really take the p***?!
Only slightly eye watering - perhaps I'm over egging this aspect of the discussion. Something like 25cents a litre more. You'd only buy a bit. There is fuel in Toulon, Le Lavendou, Port Grimaud, etc

Now, JFM's idea of Cuiitadella seems a great one - and the shortest.
No contest IMO - thats what I'd do.

If you can get in. We visited Ciutadella twice on our travels around the Balearics and were turned away on both occasions. AFAIK there is only the ferry dock available for temporary mooring and yachts were rafted out on it when we visited. The yacht club didn't seem to want visitors, at least not us, and the moorings looked quite tight. Personally I'd be heading for Mahon where a berth should be readily available and there's no risk of being turfed off

Agree with jfm. Really cannot see the point in routing via Barca and I certainly wouldn't do this trip with young kids on board. IMHO the OP should take a couple of boaty mates, one of whom should be handy with the spanners, and fly the wife and kids to SoF. Its OK putting your family through 1-2hrs of lumpy seas in sight of land but 12-14hrs offshore is a different matter altogether especially if you have to slow down to D speeds and it becomes a day/night slog

something like 25ct as JFM said,

in Toulon you should give the capitainery a Phone call in advance if you want fuel, because in the pre-season the fuel station is not alway's "open",
but it is managed from the capitainery
Phone nr Capit. Toulon is 0033494422765, difficult to find online, (just in case)

might be the same at Le lavendou, don't have the number here on hand

I use this
http://passageweather.com/
And press "animate " from this you can see how actually it all may (stress MAY ) change over say 12 hrs -so a plan B -run to port is kinda handy .
Agree with Mike F -lads trip it -day light hours of this --erh not Family or matrimonially friendly :)

Passageweather is great, although sometimes it can seem something really nasty is brewing (due to colour chart) which then to dissipates as time moves on, planning forward it often looks like there are mistrals very 3-4 days which don't materialise. As others I would prefer to wait in Menorca for the right weather, than extend to trip by an extra day or 2 and still have the Gulf to contend with. Most importantly enjoy the trip.... I see no point in frightening the family with a lousy crossing!

Just wanted to add my vote for flying the family over. Last summer, on our first outing to sea with the whole family, we were caught out by an F7. There wasn't much of a fetch so no big problem but it was bouncy, there was lot's water on the windscreen and the wind was howling. My daughter, then five, was scared and now wishes that we' would spend the coming summer in the lake...

So what happened.

Well wife and kids left Mallorca on Thursday am. 8am departure arrived estartit at 2.40 pm so 6 h 40 and 2333 litres of diesel later. 28 kts on south Coast of Mallorca then 26 all the way across

This morning left at 8am and now having a bbq in red dot bay in the Porquelkes.

Took 5.10 and did 29 kts all the way.

Worth waiting for the weather window. All happy. Kids still watching a movie !

Tomorrow upto Antibes then Cannes.

Good going, that's a mean cruising speed! Nice settled weather here at the moment. May get to say hello if you're in Antibes tomorrow night.

Jeremy, if you're feeling cheeky see if you can get a berth on mole sud or quai 1. Nick and I are both on MS, as is EME. You'll need a 23x6 for the squaddie65 and those are the two convenient locations. The alternative is round the far (west) side which is quite a walk away, or the old port (to SE of the capitainerie building) which is reasonably ok convenience-wise. Good luck. (What's name of boat - I might ping email to B in the port office, and do you want just one night ie Saturday?)

Excellent, obviously great sea conditions, along with Hurricane another happy punter cruising the Med in calm conditions...any photos/video? Hurricane has set the bar high I'm afraid!

Agreed - thats fast
Shows that you can get places quickly if you put your mind to it.
Well done - I remember Red Dot Bay well

As a quick reminder to anyone casually reading this, put "porquerolles notre dame" into google images. That is RD bay. Lucky jrudge is there right now firing up his barbecue!

The fuel consumption at 15 kts or 29 is the same. 12.5 Ish l per nm so with decent seas (the day before they were upto 3m an 40 odd knots wind) getting there faster is better all round.

Installed maretron boxes over winter so range and consumption are all real time. Big difference to me as I would have assumed faster less economical.

Saw Dolphins on the first leg. If I knew how to post pics from a phone I would oblige !
