We leave Morocco next weekend and need to crew change in Mallorca. Can anyone advise a reasonably priced marina for a for a catamaran for a couple of nights? We were going to anchor in Pollensa but this means we will have to get the dinghy off which would have been packed away for offshore work.
Thanks

I was in Mallorca in 2008 so my information is a bit out of date. I would check out the public quay (as opposed to the neighbouring marina) in Soller. I was paying 7€ a night in May which doubled as we went into June. From memory you are only allowed to stay a few nights.

The above rates were for a 42ft mono so a cat, will presumable be more.

Try the Ports IB website. Link is: http://www.portsib.es/en/paginas/home/

They are government run marinas, much cheaper than the private ones. You can check availability, book and pay in advance all online.

If crew change is in Palma and crew are flying then there is a good private marina at Puerto de San Antonio de la Playa (sometimes known as C'an Pastilla). It is 3 miles from the airport. Busses run frequently at a cost of 2 Euro's or you can splash out on a taxi. During the summer months we managed to get a berth belonging to a charter company at more than half the price of other Palma marinas - only catch was we couldn't stay at the weekends (charter changeover) but at this time of the year I dont think it would be a problem. I booked online in advance. Website is: http://www.cmsap.com/esp/ It is in Spanish but has contact e-mail/telephone numbers.

Good luck and safe passage from Morocco.

If you find yourself going up the East Coast, then I could recommend Porto Cristo. On entering the port tie up on the public quay on the starboard side. I live and work here and there´s room for a cat or two at the moment

soller might be cheap but is miles from an airport

Usual options include Real Club Nautico. More than any 7euros a night tho, but they will answer emails etc. and short cab to the airport.

If your referring to Club Nautico Palma then you could be looking at 60 to 90 euros per night.
We used to say the taxi was 15mins to the Airport and cost 15 euros. Now the cost more like 20 euros
Cala D'Or last summer was 70 euros to the airport.
A couple of years ago we hired a car and went round every marina in Majorca to try and find a cheapish berth. In the yacht club in Andratx a Spanish chap said there are 40.000 yachts trying to find 25.000 berths! Hence the high prices on the island.

Thanks for your suggestions.
I think we are going to try the Town wall in Pollensa as one of the guys really likes it there.

We are hoping if the trip from Morocco goes well we might have a few spare nights and get the chance to check out a few bays.

Thanks again

We just got back from Mallorca last night what a bloody trip!!

First, we arrived back in Smir, Morocco where we had been moored since December to find a load of gel coat damage all down one side. They'd had a storm two weeks previous unfortunately at the same time as a really high tide. In my opinion Smir is untenable as a winter marina unless on the hard. I have pictures of the storm if anyone wants to PM me.

The weather forecast leaving Morocco was pretty good with maximum winds of 25 knots forecast but we ended up in 48 knots and 20 ft seas followed by fork lightening all round the boat. This is SWMBO's 3rd trip like this and to say it has knocked her confidence once again is an understatement.

We finally arrived in Mallorca and tied up to a mooring ball in Pollensa bay which is supposedly a well protected anchorage. Monday afternoon a storm blew through again forecasted at max 30 knots so although a bit of a blow it should have been fine. The wind blew the whole night and most of the next day at around 55 knots constant peaking at 67 knots!!
We ended up with 2 bent cleats, 6 broken 1” warps, a wind gen that now sounds like a 650 Norton, a rib and outboard upside down in the water and SWMBO basically saying she wanted to get off and never step foot on “the bloody boat” again!!

We were meant to fly home on Tuesday but couldn't get off the boat as it was still blowing at 40 knots. 250 metres from the dock and no chance of getting ashore so we had to pay for more flights for Thursday.

Then to cap it all it snowed on Wednesday in Pollensa, the first time in 30 years!!

If SWMBO could have got a broker to buy the boat on Wednesday night for £50 she would have sold!!

Don't you just love this boating.

Character building sport isn't it?

My wife had a not dissimilar introduction to sailing many years ago when we got caught in a gale in mid-channel in 26 footer and the jib car and tiller broke off!

Many adventures and scrapes followed one after the other in the next 24 hours with various bits of kit bent or broken.

Reassure SWMBO that in the intervening 30 years we have not often had similar experiences.

The therapy is time spent in a few sun kissed calas with crystal clear water and golden beaches, good company and good food!

Look on the bright side - if your relationship suffers as a result of all this, at least you have got a hull each!! :D

I feel for you; I live on Majorca and the mooring budget (nothing budget about it) is astronomical.

FWIW, I have a berth in CNSP (Club Nautico Santa Ponsa) a well protected harbour. On the night of 22-23 October 09, a storm caused over 10K Euros of damage to my boat.

Not nice watching your boat bobbing 5 mtrs from a cement dock with a 60 cm storm surge and waves reaching 1 meter.... in the bloody harbour.

Expect to sell your first born as a yearly fee.

Thanks for your reply. We eventually took a mooring ball in Pollensa bay but we got hit by the storm you had on the 8th March. We recorded 62knots in the bay!! That was the day before you had the snow!!
We knew the storm was coming and tried to get into the marina at Pollensa but were told there was no room (although we could see loads of spaces). The winds were forecast at gust upto 30k so we thought we would be ok on the mooring ball, little did we know we would have hailstones at over 70mph!!
One to put down to experience I think????

blimminek, i wasn't keen on your med overwinter idea from canaries anyway. Heyho. Hope all okay. If you're planning to go over to carib, the schedule is to get to canaries before the bigger gales get going thru gibraltar ie before mid september. Good rule of thumb is whatever the gib forecast - double it for tarifa (and often for gib as well)

Hi mate

The trip up from the Canaries via Madeira was a "bit on the bouncy" side back in December but the next leg earlier this month to Mallorca was something else!
We are staying put in Croatia now for 12 months then maybe 6 months in Turkey before heading back to the Canaries for the pond jump next year. Thanks for the advise about Gib. Maybe see you again in Lanza.
Cheers

lanza is nice for liftout in calero, but consider mebbe book on to the ARC for social fun which allows you to stay in Las Palmas half the price of lanz and easily offsets the arc entry fee (but the safety inspection mite need extrs expenditure...) OR go to las palmas after arc leaves ... lots more long-distance boaties, nearby services and chandlery etc, better provisioning, better jump-off imho.
