Hi All,

I am of to Mallorca at the end of this week to look at a used sportscruiser. Subject to things working out I could do with my fellow forumites advice on the following.

Recommended surveyors
Recommended volvo KAD 44 series mechanic for an engine survey and possibly service. If one of the resident forum techs can make the trip without braking the bank I would consider it.

The current plan if it goes ahead is have a holiday there around easter and use the opportunity to do some local boating before taking the boat back to holland. Boat to the mainland and on a truck from there. Given my limeted experience of long passages in open sea I might also be looking for a delivery skipper to take her to the mainland.

Any other tips or things to whatch out for are very welcome.
Any tips about KAD 44 edc's are welcome. I know the base blocks as AD41's which where bulletprooof but the EDC part scares me a bit after reading all the issues with the D series electronics on different forums. I have managed to break the budget as usual :) so want to avoid expected costs as the plague.

If any forumites are in Mallorca next weekend (29th&30th) I am more than happy to buy a couple of beers in exchange for some local boating talk.

The kad 44 and 300 are by no where near bullet proof! get a survey done by preferably an english mechanic that is volvopenta certified and has done the edc training course, the rest of the engine is basic kad 42 principal/ components, you couls also insist it has the vodia/ or diagnostic key plugged in and data recorded so that you can see,

The hours run

max rpm attained

max temp

max boost temp and pressure recorded

max load record, etc

The results will give an overall picture as to the nature of how the engines have been treated over the years of use.

If I was available then id be glad to do this for you.

Hello.

Where is the boat that you are coming to view?

I am based in south west Mallorca, am fully Volvo qualified and have the Volvo diagnostic computer (Vodia)

As Volvopaul says there are many things to check, most important are the turbo exhaust turbine and housing which can corrode, causing problems after 4 to 5 years. You may also find that the hour meters in the revcounters don't work or the revcounters have been replaced so the only way to get the true engine hours is with the Vodia.

For surveys I would recomend Darren of Triton Marine. He has a good reputation here. You can contact him on

Hi All,
Given my limeted experience of long passages in open sea I might also be looking for a delivery skipper to take her to the mainland.

It is less than 100miles or so to the mainland. 7 hours at 15 knots. Set off in the morning when the weather is nice, and the forecast is good and it will be no problem at all.

You can do it all in day light. The tricky bit will be parking when you arrive - so you might want to spend a day or two before you leave practicing!

Hi Volvopaul,

I am aware that kad 44 & 300's are not bullet proof. As a volvo expert how would you rate them against the D4 for problem potentials 2 option at the moment are early targa 40 and bavaria 37, similar money. Bav obviously newer with D4 but not so sure about the looks and the finish and worry given all the expensive electronics issues I read about on forums.
I am wary of engines that will become a money pit. AD 41's were expensive enough without the engine itself actually going bang or electronics failing.

What would you rate as common failures on the kad 44 & 300?

Aquatom, I might be in toch tomorrow. Sounds good.

Why the issue with berthing? Stern to? Do it all the time in holland. That said do have two poles up a the front to keep the boat roughly centred.

Thanks for the input guys

I would say the kad is a more finer balanced engine, the d4 seems very rough and has had vibration issues in some boats, the balance to me seems harsh, volvo are looking into this, they almost sound and feel very agricultural to me, I would go for the kad version myself they are far easier and simpler to maintain as long as your starting off with a good pair in the first place, the t40 is a little underpowered with the kads in, if its a t40 you want then id go for one with the d6 in.

If its the bav then its a lighter boat and will be fine with either in.

Hi Volvopaul,

I agree the D6 would be the way to go if I could find one at a price I can afford. I am looking at kad 44's due to budget restrictions. My research seem to show they are good for just over 30 knots. Is this correct in your experience?

Rob

Would that enable them to cruise at say 25 knots and 3000 rpm.

I had Ad 41's in a Portofino 31 which cruised happily at that speed. Later, same engines in a Martinique 38 but it needed more like 3500 revs to plane happily and although the engines were fine it just did not sound comfortable.

40 knots with D6 sounds awsome.

Sorry. Previous statement of 40 knots was wrong. Just been speaking to a T40 owner with D6s and recons 35 to 36 knots.

Not much more than the Kad 300s
