Mallorca 108ft boat fire

Last year I did an STCW course as the USA won't recognize my UK one.

Most of the participants were in their 20 hoping to find super yacht jobs and had paid for the course themselves.

The standard of training was appealing compared to the UK courses and they would/are badly prepared for on board emergencies. At the time this train facility was affiliated with my company, now maybe the time to have the USCG inspect the trainers.

Likewise I would not want to be on one of my ex company vessel in any emergency...

Did you mean ‘appealing’? Or did you mean to type ‘appalling’? I’m just hazarding a guess here...

The Adriano one seemed to be a 40 ish foot sports boat

As per Facebook ( so may not be accurate ) it had issues / stopped. Skipper opened engine hatch / room door and it then exploded giving him 80% burns.

A reminder that air feeds fire. I have no idea of course Of the symptoms he saw before opening the hatch but I think unless we had evidence of fire most of us would open up to see what was going on. I might think twice now and look at the camera instead

The Adriano one was a Princess 266 Riviera. Then there was also a fire on a Sunseeker 92 Sport Yacht with an x-boxer on it for charter. Nothing major happened to SS at least from the outside.

Then we had a Riva in Porto Cervo - http://www.poweryachtblog.com/2019/08/out-news-riva-lost-to-fire-in-porto.html
A Giorgi in Ancona - http://www.poweryachtblog.com/2019/08/out-news-classic-giorgi-on-fire-in.html I think with the exception of Mapis none would know what a Giorgi is.
Illiterate British boaters which only know three brands I guess, ;)

Magnum 45 in Porto Ercole = http://www.poweryachtblog.com/2019/08/out-news-magnum-lost-to-fire-in-porto.html
I hope some know what a Magnum is. Sunseeker stole the emblem by the way :)

And then this 34 meter in La Maddalena http://www.poweryachtblog.com/2019/08/out-news-super-yacht-fire-in-la.html

Yes this season was on fire. To say the least.

At the sake of probably repeating myself again (and probably again), I have always been an advocate of realistic drills - with one exception most of the companies I worked with disagree(d). If you're expecting it at 3 pm every other Friday it's no longer realistic and you're expecting this weeks drill. Again change it up - if you're expecting MOB now you're having a fire.

I have no idea of the drills on these boats but if they happened at 423pm every Saturday and that was when the fire started I wonder what the crews' reaction would be? Crying wolf? Oh it's drill time again.

I appreciate this is a predominantly leisure set of forums and a lot of my posts aren't really relevant to you but if one thing I bitch about or suggest and you remember helps you I've done something useful

I've woken crews and charterers (work boats), up at obscene hours, sometimes twice in the same night - I got hell for it from the charter companies and crew but if it saves a life I don't care, even if it doesn't I did my best in case it might. Fires and collisions don't always happen in office hours, like the MOB guy taking a pee over the rail is more likely to happen at 2am than 2 pm... I've done both for the record but not fallen over!

Captains aren't alway or even usually popular in their decisions or actions until it matters.

I'm not going into details but a fellow formite sent me a paper relevant to my situation - the irony of it is the contents are so relevant to them but they would think its not - despite it totally is.

So I fell off the soap box as too much rum :) But in all seriousness if you have a safety question or any question please ask - by PM if you wish but don't be afraid - there is a huge amount of experience here and I don't include my little bit in that.

PS. Just thought of an old paramedic conversation. Unusual recruit being older than her 30's. Very, very competent EMT and I'm sure a paramedic after I moved on, had a triple fatal RTA in maybe her first week? The conversation came up that she and her husband held fire drills with their kids at home, including setting off the smoke alarms to see how they would react. Probably be classed as abuse these days but pretty sure their kids would have survived a fire at home though...
