Maldon District Council have served Maldon Yacht Club with their eviction notice.

There was no negotiation on rental terms, no prior notice and they are not forthcoming for any helpful negotiations.
The Club has been situated on their current premises for 46 years. The Club is well used, popular and deserves better than this.

With pleasure!

That's what it says on the petition, which apparently was started by the Liberal Democrats. But in press reports last October, the Council was quoted as saying "The council has offered a one-year renewal to allow discussion to take place about the future of the club, and officers and club representatives are now in discussion to explore options to see if it is possible to find a solution which allows the club to continue operating from Promenade Park." So someone's not being entirely truthful about the situation.

The year 1999 link below relates to a possible solution with a re site to Heybridge and the club only paying a peppercorn rent.

Was the project turned down by the planning department ?

I am not a member of MYC but do live in the town. Apparently the council want to put more beach huts on the site! This will spoil the view, take away some the character of the town and make it look like everywhere else! Part of the charm of the town for visitors is walking along the Prom and seeing people launching their boats, sailing or out in their canoes. Taking this away makes a visit less interesting.
At the moment the club is within walking distance of the town, not the case if it relocates to Heybridge. I also understand that the local councillors are against this proposal but the ones outside the town are for it!
And before you ask, yes, I have signed the petition. In fact I took copies to our club's AGM and collected over sixty signatures.

I happily tried to sign the petition but have not received the confirming email, and yes it was a valid address. Anyone else had a problem?

Yes, I have just tried to sign the petition but have not received confirmation. If and when I do, I will forward the link to others.

Just caught up with this and it's very sad - once a member in my early years of sailing I have fond memories of the club, the members and their welcoming attitude. I and my wife always found opening the gate and being welcomed (and not judged) as new to sailing encouraged us. We eventually had to move on because our cruising experience gained at Maldon YC mean't we could sail further. I'm convinced though the help and advice we received early in our sailing career at Maldon YC made our cruising life fuller. I sincerely hope this decision will change because our sport/hobby/pastime whatever you call it needs welcoming modest clubs like MYC to introduce folk that don't have lot's of cash to get on the water and experience the joy of life under sail. I have signed and contributed.

You need to get professional help. I assume you have a lease under the Landlord and tenant Act. If so the landlord must serve you a notice to which you must serve a counter notice within prescribed time limits. Your tenancy should be secure as a business tenancy unless the landlord has good grounds to evict. Time is of the essence. Signing a petition is pointless.

+1 Although it will cost, get the best legal advice you can get from a specialist LANDLORD AND TENANT lawyer and if necessary Counsel’s advice. In general, Councillors and their officers have great ideas with other peoples’ money and believe they can bully citizens when in fact they have very few powers apart from what is instigated and delegated by central government.
