SWMBO and I visited 10 - 12 years ago and the Maldives had a very strict form of Islam then.
The Maldives are totally dependent on tourists so it true could be the end of their tourist industry.

So sad. This could mean the death of Paradise. The Saudis have a lot to answer for.

I doubt the tourist islands would allow radicals on the island they want to stay in business. The only question is safety in Male but I assume you never leave the airport just transfer flights.

We did spend some time in Male and other non tourist islands during our visit.
I think it will be only a perceived danger that will stop tourist visiting or may be in some cases a protest vote with this kind of publicity.
