Making Yahcting Montlhy more radical

Circulation figures AFAIK are holding up quite well with the financial situation as it is.

I was expecting it to be a lot worse...so while readership is generally down across the board, on all magazines sales, not just the boaty ones, we're doing all right.

That's not to say we're going to rest on our laurels, we're always looking for ways to improve the magazine, such as the recent redesign (the Jan issue looks great btw), with focus groups, and new feature ideas, and the electronic content etc.

Looking through the running order of Feb there are some great features coming up....

Focus groups OMG .. there will be chaps and chapesses with leather patches on there sleeves and articles by commitee next!

There is already a magazine called ..

If it float, flies or f***s rent it. Subscribers include Jim Davisdon, Enron Exec's, Lehman Bros, etc

Disclaimer: this is an attempt at humour in a sailing forum and in no way is intended to reflect badly on any of the individuals or institutions mentioned above. (They do a good enough job on their own without any help from me.)

The main reason why I stopped reading YM was the cost re. the "others". It has IMHO a "thinner" content than either of the others (although ST is going this way as well). Although YM has always aimed at the more elite end of the market I get fed up with the continual big boat features, ARC type articles and the spineless editorial substance both opinion and articles. The elite will still buy it, however us lesser mortals have given up on it. In these recessionary times YM should be working much harder to retain its readership. Quite why Snooks thinks a redesign will wow the readership past the January issue is beyond me. I concur with other readers re. these forums - instant, direct, up to date and relevant. I guess we just all move on.

Sorry YM.

"There just isnt that much new happening in the sailing world."

Not so sure about that.

Canting rigs.
Speed records.
UKBA boardings.
Marine Management Act.
Threats to traditional anchorages.
The opening of the NW passage (ditto the NE passage).
E-Borders
Digital Radar
Sail tech.

for starters.

And how about an in-depth autopsy of the Peters Opal debacle. Last I checked (court conviction) it's now OK to call B Peters a crook.
How many people have lost money and what are the chances of them recovering anything?
What's being done (or more likely - not being done) to avoid something similar happening in the future?

The old yachting monthlies are still better reads than the present....there is no magic of the swatchways factor...
Plus the missing magic front cover

I agree, the magazine says "for the cruising sailor" on the cover. Lets have more to inspire our cruising and less repetition of PBO style content.

It makes good business sense, IPC are currently selling me PBO, YM and Classic Boat. But pretty soon I'm going to abandon YM, despite it being my "favourite" title for many years.

YM is like an old friend that's had a mid-life crisis and taken to wearing low slung jeans.
