Making a move, Plymouth to Hamble

Im sure there are plenty of waypoints to use but if you do not have it get the Peter Cumberlidge waypoint directory its the best boating recourse I have ever had and used!! it give every waypoint you need for the south coast and channel plus the north coast of France and Channel islands you can get them on amazon for 1p plus delivery used !!! Rocks never move only channel bouys to entrances.

I have been doing this trip for 30 years, but if I had read this thread before I started I think I would have stayed on the thames. Have a good look at a chart, plot your course, pick good weather and have the tide with you or slack through the needles. Job done, see you at hamble point, come and say hello we are on B18, Victoria Marie, Neil

Thank you Neil. We don't have much variety of experience so this is a big trip for us. It seems we need to be at the needles, Yarmouth and Hamble point all at about 1 hr before high water ? so I am going to plan to stay overnight outside Yarmouth and do the final leg the following morning so we can arrive with our thinking heads on.

Before HW where?

It can often come across that way on a forum, or even pilot books, but I guess it's just one of those posts where the OP is alerted to any areas that need caution. We should assure Cathy* though, that if the weather is fine, there's some glorious scenery on the way and once underway they can relax, but just avoid getting blown up off Lulworth Ranges ? (you'll be met by a Range Safety Boat and asked to go about 2.5 nM offshore before heading East again, all really easy if a little inconvenient)

I've planned to go south of the firing area, not taking any chances. ?

You’ve been advised every possible issue so I won’t add any confusion! Only thing I didn’t see was what boat you have?
Btw, We are in Mercury, D19. Assuming you there at some point, even if as the season comes to what will seem an early end, come say hello!

The boat is an Atlantic 38. Semi displacement. We generally move along at between 8 and 10 knotts which is the most economical. I'm hoping to end the year in mercury and get a lift out for maintenance.

A very fine boat! We are also semi displacement, cruising speed 10-11 knots.. best speed to make sure you see everything! ?

All good advice. Regarding the Hamble just aim to be there either at top or bottom of tide or during the stand and it’s fine. You mention winter lift out. Check out Shamrock quay up Southampton water. Very professional and good hard standing and support services. needles channel is fine with a Westerly and the tide with you and very pretty in moderate weather. It’s also a direct line from the firing range clearing point to the needles fairway. It’s all a lot wider than it looks on the charts and you have a powerful sea boat. If you do go the other way I would stand off Christchurch ledge altogether because of masses of lobster pots.

Thank you. I haven't started the plan from Yarmouth yet so I'll keep that in mind. I chose Mercury for the lift out because of the campsite next door. We'll be coming down from Coventry with our caravan. But we'll have time to go and look at others once we arrive.

Yarmouth hamble is very simple. Only hazards are lepe spit off beaulieu and the bramble bank which is very shallow and in an inconvenient place. They play cricket there once a year. You’ve heard about the exclusion zone in front of large shipping in and out of SOUTHAMPTON water. Otherwise follow the buoys.

The Hamble entrance, can also be interesting if you get it wrong.
