If I make a cockpit cover that covers part of the coach roof (after of the mast) and then half of the cockpit, am I likely to get birds trying to nest in the little sheltered area in the cockpit?

We don't get many birds on the boat in Dartmouth but I don't fancy coming back to a small colony under the new cover.

I dont think birds "nest" as such this time of the year, they might roost overnight though

You're certainly asking for trouble. I once had some bird take up residence in the clew end of our boomtop sail cover on our cruiser and always see evidence of them roosting under the foredeck of our dayboat. I cured the former by adding a lashing which closed up that cubby hole and am planning to have hatches made to close off the bow area of the dayboat [as was the original design].
