I recall a Southampton Boat Show back in '91 or '92. Tracy was back home and her book had just been published. 5 or 6 times a day and on every day, there came a series of announcements over half and hour or so, over the public address that Tracy Edwards was appearing on such and such a stand signing copies of her book. In truth after the first week, many exhibitors found it rather monotonous.

It was on the last day of the show when I walked past one book stand, sadly no longer exhibiting at the show these days 'cos it always had wonderful selection of nautical literature. There was a stack of her books alone on a small table by a pillar with a sign pinned above.

The sign read "TRACY EDWARDS BOOK. RARE UNSIGNED FIRST EDITIONS"

Basically she was running a business, a tough job. No-one who hasn't run a business can say a word against someone in her position. All her assets house etc were part of her business situation those assets were tools.

I've run a small business of one type or another for 30 years. I've never been tempted to raise enormous amounts of OPM (other people's money) with no repayment plan and spend it on a flash house, which doesn't help in the business, profitability, or control of costs in any way.

Not sure I see that.

The problem I referred to is some sailors knocking another sailor who has done a lot more for this sport than they have ever thought of doing.

I'm also not agreeing her recent business activities - or her personality either - are something I would even vote for. But to rationlise and create arguments on house values to justify the knocking does not work for me.

Think about house values in the south.

If Edwards had a £1M house when she started (90's) it would be worth £6M today. QED she'd have no money worries.
If she had a £50,000 house then, it could well be worth £1M today - but I suspect well mortgaged already to pay back some of her creditors.

Anyone want to see this thread go to 1000 by advising us all on a purchase price for Ellens house - or extent of Edwards mortgage etc - then feel free to do so.

But the point I trust I got over was this lady sailor is down - and simply does not need others crowing over it and recalling every time they were not acknowledged for opening a door.......signing a book.......or not delivering an expected speech.

Seriously guys, I would hope most would help her up, not pass by, or go for the booty bit.

Nuff said by me I think.

Maybe I would feel sorry for her now if she had said thank you for me holding the door but instead i will always remember her as the one who did not. Manners do not cost a penny, maybe she might rememebr that now as she has none (pennies) And Tony Bullimore is the same in fact the only ones worth talking to to are Sir Robin Knox, Ellen and Pete Goss all of which have manners, the others quite frankly can sail off into the sunset.

If that happens to you again anywhere, just do as I do. 9 times out of ten it works.

If I hold a door open, they come through and don't even acknowledge the fact, I say, very loudly "Pardon!"

Most times they will turn round and say something like "I didn't say anything" or sometimes "Wot you wont"

You then reply loudly "Oh! I thought you said Thank You"

Collapse of offending party, often with a red face.

Quite fun really. Try it. No one has hit me, yet /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Like lakesailor, I have run a business for nearly all my working life, nothing big, no real big money involved. What I cannot understand though and lakesailor will understand this, trying to raise money for legitamate business reasons is like trying to pull teeth!

So how the hell can TE get to raise the cash she is now owing? Someone somewhere has taken a gamble and given her the money, they are as much to blame as she is.

My earlier comment has been quoted, thats OK, but I must say I hate to see anyone fail in business. However it must be said that I know of people who started businesses at the same time as me and have failed, business peers. One in particular, nice guy and should have done real well. Within 6 months of startup, I was still driving around in my old Citreon Xantia, he went out and bought a new Range Rover! The rest is history.

If you borrow money for business you can either invest it in the business or just spend it. Investment you will get a return, spend it and you get a debt.

totally agree the borrowed money is not for spending on yourself it is for investing, hopfully at a better rate than you borrowed it at
