Majorca has now got me thinking again

This is the key issue for me and the Med. after a hard week at work, I don't want to be more than 2 hours away from the boat, so Med boating is out until I can free up the time to go for extended periods. I understand it works for many of you on here, but I'm with Trevor on this.

I used to think that and during my first few years in the Med I used to miss not being able to just get in the car on a whim and spend a day on the boat as I did in the UK. But I gradually got used to spending fewer periods on my boat but longer ones and knowing that there was going to be a nearly 100% probability that I would actually be able to spend those periods boating rather than hiding from the weather

Martyn, we fly to Cagliari from Stansted or at least we used to because actually we've moved on to the SoF in the last few weeks. There are daily flights throughout most of the year. We berthed in a place called Carloforte which is actually on an island off the SW coast of Sardinia. Considering where it is, it is quite a sophisticated busy town with 2 marinas and all the shops/restaurants/bars you could really wish for although teenagers are going to get bored there. There is an excellent maintenance yard nearby so getting your boat mended isnt an issue either. In terms of boating it is far less crowded than Majorca so you will never be fighting to get into an anchorage even in August and the water is amazingly clear. On the other hand it can get windy so you always have to keep half an eye on the forecast. We berthed here http://www.marinadicarloforte.it/ which is a very friendly family run marina and as I say it cost us €8000 pa for a 63 footer which is cheap by any standards

Thanks Mike - sounds as though it wouldn't work for me for the same reasons as you, but looked it up and very nice. SOF looks a good option I guess as also quite driveable for a longer break, do you know where you will end up as yet? I am in Majorca next week so going to go and see some Marinas including club de mar, and see what deals are around, San Carles looks an interesting option as does Empuriabrava, which seems to have some good anchorages around it. Quite excited at getting back into a Med boat, just want to make sure the annual running costs are reasonable and access is as easy as it can get.

Hi Martyn
If its cost and an airport look at Valencia, its dirt cheap and you can get flights pretty easy form the UK and the airport is 20 Euors taxi ride from airport in less than 20 mins!
Its not option as I prefer Denia which is 1 hour from alicante or valencia and slightly more expensive but a 1/3 of the cost of Palma!
Then just pop over to Ibiza etc in the summer months.
just a thought.

Hi Martyn, yes SoF is probably the easiest boating location in the Med to get to from the UK and I understand there are about 17 flights per day from London airports to Nice. Another critical factor for us is that there are flights from both Heathrow and Luton which are only 40mins drive from our home. It takes us about 5 hrs door to door to get to our boat now. And yes of course its possible to drive there. Actually I'm not renting a berth there but I bought a leasehold on a berth in Antibes which now have only 5 1/2yrs to run and are relatively good value. Tbh I don't know how easy/difficult it is to rent a berth in SoF but I guess that the costs will be higher than S Carles or Empuriabrava
