Hi,

Hope this is the right place to post this notice, but I am trying to reach out to as many berth holders in Brighton Marina as I can.

There are planning proposals being submitted to Brighton and Hove council this month to build another 900+ apartments in the marina including a 40 storey tower block + 5 other buildings over 10 stories high - right at the mouth of the harbour entrance. Concerns have been raised as to what impact this will have on navigation around the marina entrance, let alone the distruption within th emarina itself. (The developers are proposing bringing in a lot of the materials by sea)

Currently Premier marina's have not provided any information to their berth holders on this development, infact when asked their stance is very much to play this down (I'm only aware as I am both a berth holder and a resident). In additoin the timing of this notification means that most berth holders will not be around to se the planning notices.

More details can be found on the attached website:

Re: Ooh, it sounds fine to me!

This is a bit nimbyish. Brighton needs lots of nice new houses imho, which might mean decent restaurants, shops and bars. I would put your name down the moment they are released and make a fortune. It's also quite good fun to own a flat and a boat, cos then you can give the harbour staff the runaround by complaining about the noise in the flats (whilst on boat) and compalain about the noise of the boats (whilst in the flat). Marina appartments are an excellent place to keep boat keys as well.

"save our beautiful marina" is a bit of a lame gambit, no? I mean, it's brighton innit? So, provided that they don't put lots of barbed wire on the beach it's always an improvement, relatively?...

People are entitled to make an informed decision

Hi TCM,

Don't get me wrong - all I want to do is make people aware of what is being proposed, especially given the fact that berth holders are not being kept informed.

I agree, yes, there is value in developing Brighton Marina further, however there is an argument here for over development.

Yes but

the instant reaction in the uk is to form a protest group innit? And it's for that sort of reason that almost all the marinas in the uk are a bit rubbish, instead of a proud civic amenity they're tucked away, half-hearted, or olde worlde. What about a really decent new marina where the crappy pier is or used to be? Bet that would get loads of protests too, but it could actually be fabulous, a must-stop place for world crusing boats right slap bang in the middle of town with nice promenade instead of crack dealers. or at least, slightly upmarket crack dealers with matching trainers and no blankets.

Re: Yes but

Oy, tcm, Hands off "My" crappy pier / lump of rotting piles, at least I live near(ish) - it's not even in your District..

The West Pier was far nicer than the Palace - which is just a funfair..

Unfortunately after having my say a bit tongue in cheek, I'm afraid I have to agree with your suggestion. The Marina is stuck well to the East of the town at Black Rock and was probably given permission because it is under a cliff, however some more development might upgrade the area which to use your term "is a bit crappy"..

But to develop the West Pier site (which is what a developer supporting the restoration) wanted to do would make good practical sense, the sea front at that end of the town is a bit blank and could do with improvement. As all good ideas it would fail because it is good....

Re: Yes but

Completely agree with this. In fact why not simply fill in the existing marina and redevelop the whole lot with expensive flats etc and use the money raised to build a really nice new marina between the piers?

Agree with tcm on this. Any new development anywhere in the UK always brings out the locals in an orgy of nimbyistic opposition. Its one of the worst traits in this country. Its one of the reasons we have such a crappy 3rd world transport system
So they want to replace the port hand mark at the marina entrance with a tower block, so what. It might make it easier to see the entrance

Have to agree with you on this. Most of our county is against anything new however much we need the development.First they fought tooth n nail against the M20 then against the tunnel then against fast rail link.Curious that the wonderful w/end in Paris enjoyed by some of my friends recently would not have been possible without all three being built.Latest pub whinge is the houses being proposed for south east, kids need decent modern housing local to their work and family which they can afford. Some parts of our south east are blinking grim with lots of industrial wasteland esp.along that Thames corridor.Yes we do have a few pretty bits but no one is asking to do any major developents around those .
I bet,not a few folks down in Brighton did everything they could to stop the marina ever seeing the light of day.
Bit of a shame there is no where boaty to go to tho....../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif
Having been there on half a dozen trips to view boats, the main thing i recall was the number of boats being used as liveaboards due to lack of shorebased stuff available in the price bracket people wanted to pay

I've seen the proposed plans. Looks good to me. Any development which demolishes ASDA in the marina has my vote. People whinged and protested when the last development there was proposed, but not only does it look good, have some great bars and restaurants (but sadly no shoe shops) it has enhanced the price and saleability of the current accommodation.

Just a couple of points for clarification:

(1) I'm not against further development of the marina - the purpose of the post was to try and inform current berth holders of the plans as there is no information currently available from the Marina. The link I attached is the only one I have found which gives info on the development (granted that this is one sided).
(2) The development does not mean, unfortunately, knocking down Asda, David Lloyd or the Casino - which IMHO would be a great idea - this development is being proposed for the "beach" infront of this wonderful buildings
