I have an (to me) unknown type of Lewmar 30 one speed winches on my boat - the winch dates probably from 1984 (age of the boat). I would like to service the winches, but have no idea how I can take them apart. It's not the usual with removing a ring and lifting it off. On the Lewmar site I can't find any information on this type. The picture beneath shows the winch.

Anyone knows how to service this type?

Is there no screw head in the area where the winch handle goes? Mine had grease there obscuring the view of the screw. After that it was easy to clean and service. There must be an opening somewhere.

I'm not familiar with the type of winch you show, but have you had a look down the handle socket? I have a Barlow winch which is released that way using an allen key.

Can't quite see from the photo but it looks similar to my old Lewmars. Mine have split ring at the top that fits aound the top of the handle spline. If you don't look closely enough it looks just like a washer. Remove this & you can take the drum off.

Yours may be different though.

It looks very similar to some old Lewmar 34ST winches that I have. [They may just be a different size]. Lewmar Ltd were very helpful and e-mailed an exploded diagaram and some instructions when I asked them last year.

If you want a copy of what they sent me, send me a pm with your e-mail address.

The way to get them apart is to unscrew the self-tailing assembly on the top.

There's no screw or split-ring, I'm sure about that. It could be the same as the 34ST - anyway the only solution I can think of is unscrewing the whole self tailing unit (but which way to turn?).
I'll send you a PM for the diagrams.

Deap breath, piece of wood and a hammer.

I have the same winches on Restless. Just tap the feeder arm - the crown comes off if you turn it anti-clockwise.
