Found another one in my range. This one is a Mainship 40 from 1981. Trawler style. Looks good, aparently burns 1gph at 10kn, huge interior...

Anyone have any experience with this one?

One immediate flaw I can see is that the aft cabin is full width so you can only walk halfway down the deck... I suspect that this will cause problems when mooring?

You need to speak to mainshiptom. He's got one and apparently has vast beer carrying capacity although neither myself or Oldgit have found where he hides them.

I think you're flitting about here .

Yes I am a bit... I'm looking at prices and then seeing if the boat fits a basic set of criteria.. (SD or FD mainly).

The mainship is in Kent (where the Nelson 40 is lying) and so would make sense for first looks to check both of them out at the same time.

Having no experience, I don't know what I want /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif It has to be safe, seaworthy, cheap to run and comfortable.... I'm less bothered by speed and trendy design.

I know Tom's does all the things you want but does use slightly more fuel!
If you PM him I'm sure he'll be more than happy to talk.

1gph? Is that the oil consumption? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

These are the manufacturer quoted figures. 1gph @ 10-11kns with a top speed of 15kns out of 2 x 165hp perkins diesels. Probably a little less as the engines are not new.

So 1gph @ 10kns (10mpg), with a 320g tank should give a range of 3000+ miles for 44p a mile at white diesel prices!

Blimey, does look like it if its the one on boats and outboards!
If it is Toms I've been onboard and it is nice and spacious and we came back from Ramsgate together through roughish seas and it went along nicely.

I am waiting for the ower to confirm figures....

If he confirms the figures of 1 GPH, on those engines at 10 knot, he is:
1) Not telling the truth
or
2) .......... Lying...

That boat will need more than use of 18 - 20 SHP to obtain 10 knots...

Perhaps 1 MPG may be more realistic ... giving 10 GPH .... pending engine load of course .... but then we get into the fuel economy debate again ....

A quote from the Mainship website (I followed the link):

'MAINSHIP did not conduct the performance data test(s) published in the enclosed article(s). Therefore MAINSHIP cannot guaranty or be liable for the accuracy of test report(s). MAINSHIP does not guaranty the speed or range of its products and makes no representations other than are provided in its written Limited Warranty. Many factors may affect actual performances obtained on this boat or on similar boats, these include, but are not limited to, installation of certain options...'

I wouldnt base your costs on 1GPH if I were you!

Or somewhere in between, I'd expect maybe 6-7 gals per hour at 10kts.

[/ QUOTE ]

Owner confirms that as the engines will sup about 4.5gph @ 8kns nowadays... which gives her about a 500mile range. This seems more realistic.

That would be taking out a total of approx 90 SHP of the engines ... and travelling at near displacement speed (hull speed), so quite realistic I guess ... bump her up to 10 - 12 knots, and I would expect to see quite different figures...
Also, take off 20% of range for safety margin ....
