Morning people,

Can anyone give me a typical price for a new mainsail and new genoa for a yacht of around 29-30ft. I.e Westerly GK29 etc size boat?

Just curious on budgeting.

Many thanks,

Nick

Thats almost impossible to answer with any degree of accuracy as there are so many variables - cloth, race/cruising spec, quality of work, numbers, insignia, UV strip, batten types, number of reefs, show discounts, time of year etc etc - any good sailmaker will be happy to quote for your specific needs. We recently had a quite from Kemp for cruising sails ( main & 140% #1) for our 24ft and depending on final spec came in at between £1200 and £1800, of course had we gone for high spec racing cloth that could easily be doubled but thankfully we don't race. I would think add another 50% on top of those figures for your boat and you'll be in the right ball park.

About 8 years ago (!), I got a new Dacron Mainsail for a 27' IOR (i.e. small mainsail) boat from 'Far East Sails' for £325. The mainsail was OK - good weight of dacron, and triple stitched.

Sadly Far East Sails seem to be around no longer. They used to advertise in the back of YM.

I would think of £2k as a starting figure for Dacron sails without too many whistles and bells - maybe a uv strip. Much easier to double than halve this figure, depending on specs.

Suggest you use this website to get an accurate price - won't be the cheapest but will be value for money.
There are lots of variables, so many as to make your prices vary from about £2K to about £4.5K, depending on the quality of woven sailcloth you choose (and leaving out exotic laminates). So filling in the quote questionnaire will concentrate the mnd admirably.

Which site ???

Crusader have a good reputation but you could also have a chat to Pete Sanders of Sanders Sails. One of the only other sailmakers to still make in country and he is knowledgeable and he doesn't need to advertise. He's currently making a new suit of sails for Serendipity.

North quoted for our just under 40 foot cruiser at SIBS-£1725.00 for a main in their heavy cruising cloth.

I was pleasantly surprised.

The price included the show discount, but I am reliably informed that as long as you order at a slackish time discounts can be got for the asking.

One of our berthing neighbours tells me Sanders in Lymington Quoted to replace has staysail, jib, mizzen and main for 5k.

Deals appear to be out there-dont be shy about asking.

My philosophy is simple-if you dont ask you dont get..............................................

Thanks everyone for the information. That's certainly given me the info I need to get a general idea where I'm aiming at. :)
