Thanks again to everybody for their time and comments. My Windy 525 is a Leo Bruckner designed dinghy, built in 1974. The actual class was instigated in 1964,in France, so there is a 50 year anniversary party this year. I was looking for something like a wayfarer, and found her for no money, complete with road/launching trailer. She is described as fast but stable and safe under spinnaker, 5,30 loa 160kgs mainsail 11,60m2 jib 4,6m2, genoa 7,5m2 spinnaker 20m2. The painting is coming along very well, using Toplac over prekote and interdeck in the cockpit. Will post photos when work complete and she is launched.

After trying different options that have been suggested, the one that seems to work with the fittings on the boat, is a car on the traveller across the stern and a cunningham and kicker arrangement. Thanks to lakesailor for the excellent link to the graduate site. It would seem that on the graduate that any system for controlling the car is outweighed by the problems of the control lines getting tangled in the mainsheet and the problem of easing the main in a gust, but I can always try that system at a later date. Once again, thankyou to those who were forthcoming with excellent advice, photos and diagrams.
