A friend of mine rang me about a new main for his Jeanneau 34.2. The local agent for Hyde sails quoted €2300 plus 23% Vat for a fully battened cruising sail.Is this good value?

Impossible to say without knowing the spec of the sail. Prices can vary enormously depending on the features and particularly the material used. The only way to find out is to get a quote for the same spec from 3 or 4 of the popular sailmakers. With a regular production boat your friend has it should not be difficult to get quotes.

That's about £2300 pounds. I'd say it's a bit steep but I did find when getting quotes for my new main that prices did vary a lot.
As said it cost nothing to get a few quotes. Some of the big manufacturers will only need the type of boat to give you a quote.

For comparison: my new main is due for Feb/March delivery.

Cruising Dacron 10.3 oz, 5 full length battens, Sailman adjustable batten boxes, triple stitched pockets, reinforcing in all the right areas etc.

Delivered and fitted by the sailmaker, test sail, tweaking and chafe protection where applicable.

Terms are 30% on order with balance after all the above. Price is €3,900 inclusive of 23% VAT.

Boat is a Moody 47.

Ask Crusader for a quote, you'll get an answer back in a day or two.
I've asked them for heaps of quotes before, they don't seem to mind :)

+1. They made our new sails 2 years back and were the most competative by about 20%. Good sails and good service. Both main and genoa in their cruising dacron (can't remember the weight) for about £2,900 including delivery to a UK address.

No connection, just a satisfied customer etc etc.

Edit: Should have said only partially battened main, not fully battened.

Sounds reasonable value.

Distance buying is fine till you hit a problem. I am always willing to pay a fair premium for a local product, particularly with a thing like a sail.......well particularly with anything really.

The problem is their loft is in the Philippines.

Andrew Wood Solo Sails in Penzance made me a very nice sail for our sigma 38 . Material was hydranet radial . He was cheaper than the main line lofts in Southampton . it is very important when comparing that the spec is like for like as , the cost of the material and the time to make it up will be different if any part of the spec changes .

we chose hydranet in the hope it will last longer , you are going to look up and see that sail for a long time .
cost increase for Hydranet
cost increase for radial cut
longer term it may be cheeper but we will see
Would i have him make another sail for me ABSOLUTLEY very knowledgeable re sail shape
nice guy to deal with , no connection other than a very happy sailor

But that'll be a sail cut in the uk and shipped to Portugal? Isn't there anyone in Portugal who will cut a decent sail? Not criticizing the choice, just wondering why your pal wouldn't source locally?

He's getting a good discount and apparently this sail comes out cheaper than a local one.

No, a sail designed in the UK, then made in the Phillipines and shipped to Portugal :)

Possibly not. Leisure sailing is a much larger market in the UK, it's possible that in some places it's not big enough to support the full range of specialists.

Crikey I wouldn't fancy that at all.

Yeah I can believe that. Sad if a maritime country like Portugal doesn't still have the local skills though. Even then you'd think there'd maybe be a uk sailmaker or two who fancied retiring to the sun and undercutting the British market on the odd occasion. That after all is why so many British sailors/boats are there...
