As Potato said, they want grease. Waterproof grease, else it won't stay put for long up there at the bow. For my Furlex that is calcium grease (clear brown, not the milky thickened type). Silicone grease would also work in a pinch, and if you don't want to carry a whole box of various lubricants, you could do worse than a tube of Super Lube (silicone grease with PTFE), which will work on winches, furlers, electrical contacts and rubber seals (but not near things that get hot, like on the engine). If you get it places you didn't want it, you can wipe it off with builder wipes.
