I wish to order a new main halyard for our Centaur but the boat is in Rosneath and I am in Dumfries. All the technical stuff I have looked up give you every dimension but the height of the mast. I reckon I will need 64 ft. to come back to the cockpit. Is this about right or does anyone know the exact specifications for a Centaur Main halyard?

Thanks for any help offered?

Dougie, That sounds about right, 30ft mast although that will only get you back to the bottom of the mast, not back to the cockpit.

You will need also to allow for the halyard being clipped to the outer end of the boom, plus a couple of feet to go round winch drum if led back to cockpit, and a yard of tail. Make a bit of allowance for chopping off 8 inches occasionally to allow the jamming clutch fresh rope to bite on, and the sheave blocks to have fresh rope to bend round it, I reckon you will need about 80-85 foot minimum.
If you are thinking of being able to hoist someone onboard from the water with it, add another 10 foot or so.

Thanks for that guys. I have asked Jimmy Green for a quote on 26 m. of 10mill. braid on braid with a thimble fitted. The online price is 1.43 a metre + the thimble.

Think about not having a thimble, but using a knot, then you can shorten that end when you need to avoid the inevitable chafe.....

If I do that, I do not need a new halyard. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I was replacing it because the area around the thimble was chafed at this time.

I agree. The spliced loop and shackle looks very swish, but I find it as quick to tie and untie a knot. Splice is stronger, but when you're using rope with a breaking strain of over three tons it doesn't really make a difference.

A braid-on-braid splice is quite long, as well, and might be a bit thick for the masthead sheave.
