After years of waiting work has started this week in building the new berths in Mahon. Thrapsa the company who have taken over from the old Club Maritimo have stuck to their word with 160+ new moorings for this season.

This is great news for all the cruisers who tried in the past to get a berth whilst visiting the island from Spain or Mallorca.

With the new development and Marina in Ciutadella at the other end of the island it looks like the Menorceans have finaly decided to create the perfect motor yacht cruising area.

The only down fall to all this is that I have JCBs and pile drivers working 24-7 outside my apartment. Do I care? Not at all it looks like they are creating some great berths and marina facilities. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Gskip, that is indeed good news, particularly for Cuitadella where berthing options are so limited and yet the town is so worth visiting. Where in the harbour will the new marina be because it's all v tight in there especially when the ferry comes in? Is there any plan to mitigate the effects of the resaca tidal surge which seems to occure regularly?

I'm trying to think where you could put 160 berths, the bit between Club Maritimo and the ferry terminal has all the glass bottom boaty things and floating restaurants. Are they going to build them between the ferry terminal and the boat yard just past Pedro's boat centre?

Deleted User. They are building a protected sea wall at the mouth of Ciutadella. which will offer berths for large vessels cruise ships ferrys etc. This will create space inside the port of Ciutadella. Afraid nothing will stop the tidal surge. also digging out the small cala to the left of the entrance to create further berthing .

As far as Mahon and Pandana's question the berths are created due to a new company called Trapsa taking over from Club Maritimo. What we had was one T pontoon and quay side berthing with the old Club Maritimo set up. Ths has become antiquated and required a membership to get a berth. Now Trapsa have taken over they are putting in new power and pontoons from the end of Sunseekers moorings right down to the fuel bay in Cala Figure. If you know the port, from the bar Latitude 40 to the fuel bay. Plans also passed to develop Cala Figure it's self, turning this into another marina. Fuel Bay to be move eventualy to the area of the Naval Base.

Hurricane, no I have requested you a berth on the Sunseeker moorings. which is well away from it all. As I write this they are now digging right down by the fuel bay so looks like the digging out bit is nearly compleat.
