MAGNUM to the Med - the adventure begins

Some nice updates ... bookmarked.... very interested in your fuel burn figures... something a ragging dosent really understand....

Great thread, if possible can we have little maps so we can picture where you are for posts where you move (I know I could google the ports myself of course)
I can't find a map widget for Wordpress. If anyone knows of one please let me know.

Hi Mark & Claire

Only just caught up with this, what an adventure! Looks like Emma already has her sea legs.

Keep the posts coming so that us jealous dreamers can do the voyage with you.

Don't know if Mallorca is in your plans but we are there at various times this Summer - our youngest daughter is getting married there late July ! - and it would be great to catch up with you both - and Emma of course.

Safe Travels

Martyn

Great that you got into chalutiers - I bet you are enjoyng people watching - it's a great spot.
Looks like you are racing down at a fair kilter, what is your current turning point for crossing Biscay? Or are you going all the way to Bayonne/Bairitz before heading west?
Good luck and enjoy the Market. If you have a sitter or a sleepy child then the 4 sergeants is a great restaurant and well worth a visit while you are in LR.

It certainly is Martyn and we look forward to seeing you both when we get there :)

We went to 4 Sergents last night with Emma. I was a bit disappointed. The food was OK'ish but too expensive for what it was.

Regarding Biscay, our intention is to cut across from here to Santander which 202NM. A bit chunky but there are surprisingly few alternative ports of call. Marina Santander not replying to emails at the moment either.

+1 for the 3 Sergeants. We are in Portosin (Ria de Muros) which is well worth a visit if you have the time in passing. Lovely marina and club house with nice swimming beach close by. We plan to be in Sada (close to A Coruna) on Thursday but next weeks forecast looks as though we may be there for a few days at least. Safe passages.

That's a shame - we've had some good evenings there.

You are a little less well catered for from La Rochelle to Santander.
I'm sure you are not nervous but if you prefer the inshore route then head to cap Bretton with the knowledge that you are able to pull in to Arcachon if things get tiresome. Inshore route is only viable at the weekend tho' as there's a big exclusion zone in force on week days. Then you have Zumaya and Loredo to use on the way to Santander.

But the 202nm is tempting if you are in a hurry to get to warmer weather :)

You will enjoy the paperwork at Santander Marina - good luck with that! :)

I'm a bit late in joining those who wished you all the very best for your epic trip, but better late than never - bon voyage indeed.
Looking forward to meet somewhere in the Med, hopefully sooner rather than later! :encouragement:

We went all the way round the coast. If going into Arcachon, do not call in advance to ask for a berth. They will say they are full.
You may need to bypass the waiting pontoon (full of local boats) and find an empty berth or even raft up and then sort it out with capitainerie after the event. Worst place we ever stayed.
Cap Breton, take careful note of approach instructions esp re while water. Delightful place. Marina staff really helpful.
Zumaya good stop too.
Don't miss La Coruna.

By the exclusion zone, do you mean French missile firing? In practice it isn't every week day, (or even every week) and I recall there is a website you can check actual days.

We considered going to Arcachon a few years ago when in the Gironde. A Frenchman on the boat next to us said he had a holiday home there so we were expecting him to sing its praises, but he said never consider going there by boat, in his exact words "eet iz a shit!"

Not much in Santander IMO.
That where the Plymouth/Portsmouth ferries go so we often find ourselves there.
There is a town there but not worth spending time there - IMO.
