As replies above - you are asking a lot and you may find that the deviation changes once engine is running, depending on the output from the alternator !

"like a Sestrel Moore type, but again, that would be very vulnerable to being torn off or stepped on"

Yes - I always thought them vulnerable, but have sailed miles with them and never a broble, and no problem at all if below a sprayhood.

Tied up away from the storm. Oh yes.

Thanks all.

I'm going to go for an "iron balls" solution - just to make the SWMBO's eyebrows rise. As for relying on the electron, I've got loads of that too, just I'd like a working compass for those "gravy in the fusebox" moments. Balls and Magnets will also give me hours of fun. I'll let you lot work out the innuendos..

I used to make them, but I won't fit one on my boat.

"You'll need to swing it twice, once with the engine running and once with it off and may need to produce two cards."

If you were in an aeroplane and the engine stopped, would you worry too much about compass error?
You would know which direction you are going to go!

You know that magical moment when you switch the engine off and, in the deafening silence, all the gentle little sounds of sailing return?* It's just like that in a motor-glider. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Of course, the silence takes on a totally different perspective in a Harrier at 300' I would imagine.....

[/ QUOTE ] That silence has another silence shortly afterwards. The 'shortly afterwards' is filled with a bang and whoosh as the ejector seat takes you clear of the Harrier.
