Brendan, I think you misunderstand - I don't actually want to be able to find the way back to the place I started from. If Mrs C finds out that I could have got home fine and made my ETA by navigating with the GPS + charts then I'm in big trouble! Where as hopelessly lost through no fault of my own due to an unexpected quirk of mother nature is going to get me a lot of sympathy.

Anyway I did the old RYA course "GPS is the spawn of the devil" so even if it was all that was available I wouldn't trust it and would fling it overboard!!!!

Another thought, doesn't GPS tell you the difference between magentic and true north, so all you need to do is look up the error "ah, now deviation 173 degrees East", then toss a coin to decide whether to add or subtract it, and you're away.
