Magnetic Door Catch

If the situation allows, there's a huge range of Neodymium magnets on Ebay - simply install one each side (drill holes if necessary) and epoxy in place. If you're on a tight budget, thin ones, roughly 20mm square can be extracted from old hard drives. But as someone has already said - beware of the distance to the nearest compass.

Magnetic door catches

Thanks for your help!
Just to complete the story, we have a door separating the saloon from the forward companionway. We usually leave it 'on the hook' while sailing to allow airflow. However, it only needs the boat to heel a bit, hit a few waves and the hook releases, and the door slams, followed by the usual curses. Then someone (she) has to go below to secure it properly. Therefore, we are looking for a reliable and easy way to keep it open when required. I could change the hook to a more secure one like Force 4's 'silent hook', which is very good, but you still have to hook it on. The magnetic catch would be quick and effortless. There are no compasses nearby!

Cheers,

Michael.

Here is a selection of door holders. The rubber one is very effective.
